99 4x4 3.0l, got the starter unbolted but it is jamming between the oil pan and front diff going the bottom and against the steering shaft going the other way. Is there a trick, or is it just one those things you got to get just right ??
thanks for any help.

I haven't worked on a 3.0 but usually I have to get the ass end of the starter up and twisted then drop the nose down and out.

^ What he said...

I haven't done a starter on a 3.0 either but I do know the steering columns can come out fairly easily if needed...well, not really easily as you need to remove the steering column from inside the cab to drop the steering shaft...but that's not as hard as it seems either...

I'm sure you shouldn't have to remove the steering column to change a starter though...if you have a Haynes or other manual it will give step by step instructions if nobody else steps in to offer insight...

ass, nose down it should come right out, but it is fetching up on about a quarter inch of metal.

Had this issue on the Pinto. Might have a failing motor mount. Try using a floor jack and a block of wood to jack up your drivetrain enough to make it fit on the way out.
