2000 ranger 4x4 the motor is a 3.0 flex with a 4r44e transmission. After 250k miles my engine gave way and blew a head gasket then seized up Number two cylinder was eating up antifreeze and the motor did not like this. After tracking down a flex engine I went through the motor and reworked it.

Had problems turning the engine after bolting the engine up to the trany it was not fully seized but much friction on the breaker bar. I have been reading that the torque converter installed improperly could damage the pump on the transmission. In haste I installed my torque converter improperly and bolted my transmission up to the engine, I cant beleive i did this but I know this is what happened.

The questions are

How do i determine if there is any pump damage? before proceeding on this project.

Do I remove the bell housing or can I put the transmission in neutral and feel on the pump shaft if not operating properly?

Thanks for your time.

Daniel

Sorry for the bad news>>>

BOMK there is no way to inspect the pump externally, not sure you could see it at all without takin the pump itself apart.......I have done this myself, pump lasted 50 miles before it went south.

Total trans rebuild is best, as you don't want to just install a new pump & runs, as there could be shavings in the trans that would damage the new pump & other stuff inside.

Even though the pump has not been used the shavings would not be distributed so the pump would the only thing needing inspection then, Could the pump be removed while in the truck with engine out and have a high expectation of getting back in. I am aware it is on the bell housing.

Pulled off bell housing and tore into the pump, did not find anything damaged. the pump gears are intact. Now have to wait on new seals for the bell housing to reinstall. I will try to get part tommorow, but up in grayling michigan not till monday another wasted weekend waiting on parts

Feeling your pain.

I got the same ranger as you. Changed engines, put my tranny on and stacked my TC into my pump as well. I pulled it apart(dropped my tranny). Pulled my pump off, cleaned up my input shaft splines and my pump. Got it back together and reinstalled. When I fired off the engine... my tranny won't pump fluid sooooo it won't take gear. Right. Back out it comes. Taking it to a shop. Talk about wasted time. My advice is get some help. Maybe your better at gambling than me?

^^ agreed if you torqued the tranny onto the engine without the pump not lined up with the torque converter you damaged the pump. Been there done that better safe than sorry make sure the tranny is 100% before you put it in.

You will hear a sound when the tranny merries up to the engine right if you dont hear that sound dont bolt it up.
