help! I have a 1991 ranger and when i put it into reverse or drive there is something clanging, it sounds like a thin piece of aluminum rattling but cant find it, any thoughts on what it could be, any ideas are good ones

Is it just once, or is it continuous. Might be a loose heat shield.

its continous, not heat sheild checked that already

Hard to say without hearing it for myself.

ck exhaust system, u joints, carrier bearing/bracket. Best way is to put the whole truck up on stands, climb under, have someone drop it into gear for you and it should be obvious.

not anything part of exhaust system, had it up on a hoist and sound like it was coming from the fan area.

In that case forget the stands. Have someone drop it in gear for you while u peek under the hood.

Bad, broken, or lose motor mount, causing the engine to lift up on one side when dropped in gear and the fan hitting the shroud?
