i got a 94 ranger with a 4.0 and when i get under the truck the whole oilpan is covered in grease :icon_confused:and it runs down and drops off the drain bolt. there looks to be a dab comin off the oil filter also. but i just put new oil and a filter in it about a month and a half ago.......

could be coming all the way up from the valve covers..

yes i could diagnose this leak, but since im not there you'll have to do it.. its not hard.

gravity naturally pulls oil down towards to ground so naturally you should start at the highest point in the engine and go down from there

eh...when you aren't used to looking for leaks, sometimes one just doesn't know where to start.

If it seems heaviest around the filter area I might suspect a double o-ring filter. You sure you got the old one off with the old filter? It's nothing to be ashamed of....I've done it.

The second thing to look for is if there is oil anywhere between the stretch of block between the valve covers and oil pan. If not look at the oil pan. Is it wet all around or just towards the rear? Could be the pan gasket or Rear main seal.

Maybe take some pictures?

i tightened down the valve covers when i got the truck. im not sure but i think i checked for the old o-ring seal. but ill try to take some pictures tomorrow.

you can use simple green and a brush I do a 50/50 mix of SG and water but some people use it straight........and clean the entire area up.....then rinse with water....then you will be able to see the leak.........

replace your PCV valve and make sure the hose isn't clogged to rule that out. If that valve is stuck shut the pressure will push the oil out the rear main and cause oil to run out and all over the pan. its only a $2 part.

When you did your oil change did you put the new o ring in there dry? Or did you make sure both sides of the o ring were lightly lubed?

PCV valve if the truck has one is going to be in the valve cover. drivers side. with a hose running from it, to the intake.
