I am wondering because it seems I could get much better mileage if everything wasnt turning but just the wheels. Am I dreaming or can this be done? Any info is appreciated. thx
It is possible with an awful lot of work. Basically you convert the front spindles, hubs and everything else over to the 98-00 Ranger style and put on the AVM manual locking hubs. In reality it is a lot of time and money for maybe one extra MPG.
No. Also the 98-99 vacuum hubs proved to be troublesome and unreliable. Ford's own tests showed (on an Expedition) than an always-live front diff filled with synthetic lube got only 0.3 mpg less than one with unlocked hubs.
