i have a 1998 ranger with the 2.5l and 5 speed manual and was wondering if i could match up the 3.0l or 4.0l v6's with that transmission or do i have to get a different transmission

You also need a new transmission. Bellhousings are integral. And bellhousing patterns are different. If you can, nab the transmission from the truck you get the engine from if it is a 2wd. I think you can swap tailpieces from a 2wd to a 4wd though. Might want to check on that before you start buying parts.

Welcome to TRS by the way.

thats what i figured but wanted someone who actually knew to clarify and thank you thats more then likely what ill do

Ya you need a transmission. You should just get a donor truck it would be a lot easier cuz you have everything you need right in front of you. I would also recommend avoid the 3.0 L. It's a good engine just slow as heck. Welcome to the site!

if your gona go through the trouble of a v6 swap, go for the 4.go and avoid the 3.slow

You cannot just "swap tail housings" to make a 2wd trans 4x4 or vice versa. The tail housings swap directly, but the output shafts are different lengths. A 2wd shaft will not engage a transfer case and you will get it all together and go no where fast.
