I have a 1988 Ranger 2.9L v6, and I'm gathering up the parts for a performance exhaust system. I've been told that with fuel injection you have to have a cat otherwise the o2 sensor reads wrong and makes the engine run weird. Does anyone know if this is true, or can I go cat-less?

Keep the cat.

That being said, I dont have one. It sounds better with one IMO, but my computer isnt messed up. No check engine light, no loss in mileage. But, I think you should leave the cat on.

I dont have one on mine currently, and it runs fine (86 ranger 2.9L) mine was hollowed out, so im in the process of finding a new one, but for now i got straght pipe and a glasspack :)

(by the way, get ready to hear ALOT of posts telling you its illegal an all that crap) just warning ya lol

yeah

i dont have one sounds good runs fine

we have 5 cars and only one has cats on it and its the only one with stock everything

i wouldnt keep it for when the scrap prices are up i sold some for $75 each

this place called recycle usa

they take everything

last summer they found that the new cats had this special aloy in them

so the price went way up because they were just taking them for that

it was crazy tho the ummm..... n!&&ers were cutting them off cars at night

so you would wake up start your cat to go to work and it was straight piped right under the seat

talk about wake up call

my 30 v6 has a 3 inch piece of stainless steel pipe in its place and a super 44 flowmaster on it currently, used to have 2 fart cans, and a bunch of other stuff over time. my factory cat and precat stopped up and i was getting 8mpg so i had a performance cat and turbo muffler installed, didnt sound too bad, then i removed the ac and installed a homemade cold air intake, blew the muffler in half from the extra flow. so i had dual straits on it, got a sound ticket, had the fart cans put on and sounded good. then my performance cat stopped up (trk burned 1 qt of oil every 1000 miles) and i had the pipe in its place, fart cans tripled in volume, and got another sound tkt. i installed a turbo muffler and then put the fart cans in line, ignition system went out (corroded terminals) and backfired blowing the turbo muffler in half, so i got the super 44 and put in its place. i got 200 miles to the tank rather than 300, so i cut the fart cans off and had a 45 degree elbow turn it down and had a fart tip, didnt sound too bad and averaged 34 mpg hwy. i took the fart tip off and it kind of sounded hollow, then the oil pump went out and ran on 3 cylinders back to the house. all in all from 120000 miles when i first modded the exhaust to 278600 miles when she finally flipped me the bird i did have check engine lights but not from o2 sensors. i am going to rebuild it turbo 3.3 and after the turbo run 2 1/2 straight pipe to the super 44 and see how she sounds, if i dont like it then back to the fart can. fk the sound tkt, cant exactly quiet a turbo can you? lol...and the alloy they found in the cats is platinum, been doig it since 2002, ive heard of large cats selling for as much as 175 dollars at scrap yards cuz of it.

no just a cheap muffler that had poor characteristics, it was all the guy had and it was for a 2.0 four cylinder but would flow well for a stock 3.0 w/ cat on it.

Sorry, we don't allow discussion on here of removing emissions components. It's illegal by federal law, no matter what your local states choose to enforce.
