I have a '84 Ranger with a 2.8 V-6 and a C-3 Transmission(basically a AOD with no OD)

What had happened is we ran Trans-X thru the transmission, and left it in there, and apparently it hardened up a seal and I got a leak.

It is leaking around the gear selector shaft that goes thru the case on the drivers side. I suspect it is the "seal" on the shaft, thus I need to remove that shaft.

Looking at the diagrams of my transmission rebuild maual, It looks like all I need to do is this:

-Remove outer shaft nut, remove kickdown lever,

-remove o-ring off of shaft disconect the shifter linkage

- remove nut on the inside of transmission

-shaft should slide out of case

-acess to the defective seal

Now that seal, the diagram was not in detail, is that seal located on the inside of the transmission or the outside?

I do believe this seal is the cause of the leaks, as the only place I am seeing transmission fluid leak is around that shaft area.

Can I do this job without removing the shifter body, and am I qualified to do this job? (I've rebuilt motors many times, but no transmissions)

How much would a shop charge to fix this?

try running lucas transmission fluid stuff thru it first. that stopped a bad tranny pan leak on my 83

I'd suggest pulling the tranny youself and take a look at it when you get it out. If it looks too complicated, take it to a tranny shop. What could they charge you, an hour labor? The big bucks would be their pulling it and putting it back. I'm betting you can do it yourself...
