Can I bypass the VSS on my tranny?

Well my speedometer is'nt working with the new transmission I swapped in. The CEL is not on however, and I was wondering if I could bypass the two wires by running them together. I'm trying to avoid removing the tailshaft but if I have to I will. I'm going to kick myself if I have to though because it was already drained and ready to swap and then I filled it. Argh!

Anyone have experience with this? Thanks.
