I have an 07 Ranger and I have lost one of the keys for it. The problem is that the keys have a chip in them and are programmed to that specific vehicle. This is a shitty deal because if you need to get a new key made, it has to be done at a shop, which could mean having to get towed to one if you dont have a key. Does anyone know how a guy could get around whatever it is in the ignition that reads the chip, so that the vehicle can be started with just a normal key? :icon_confused: Any help or thoughts are appreciated
Merry christmas

well if you still have a Key and want to make it work with any cut key, you can tape the PATs(chiped) key to the inside of the colum plastics. Also keep in mind that places like Ace can make you a spare key just from one key.
And also if you have two keys you can program a new key at home.

Im gonna give that taping the key inside the column a try, thats a good idea. Thanks man I appreciate it!:icon_thumby:

The taping wont work. The key has to be in the ignition for the PATS system to recognize the chip.

This would work, but do you want a key for the truck left in the truck?

I'm not sure. I went to Ford to get a spare key, 130 bucks! =[

sucks, doesn't it? try to make friends with someone who works there and you can get it all done for about $30.

false, the key should be as close to the steering column as possible though.

There isn't a real way to bypass the system without tearing into a bunch of stuff YOU don't want to tear into. This can also lead to a system lock down and a MORE costly repair while FORD gets to RAPE you for a new key plus resetting the system. Don't you have a spare key?

This is off subject, but I just had a perplexing problem with the PATS system on a 98' explorer. Original diagnosis was a bad fuel pump, they replaced the pump. Used the Drivers usual key. No start. Hmmm. Fuel is reaching the rail? There's spark? What's going on here?

Never would have guessed the PATS system.....For some reason the system needs to see that 2nd key every once in a while. If not it disables the fuel injector driver's in the PCM. This was ONLY caught by my schools new FORD laptop based scan tool. The SnapOn and other off-brand didn't even register.

i know this thread is dead but my little brother just got his truck and he has only one key. i told him to try to tape the key next to the ignition cylinder. im just wondering if any one does this in their truck and knows it works because ill be damned if i pay or he pays ford 130 bucks for a new key.

Call around to your local locksmiths. My son lost my key to my wifes Escape, that left us with one key. I had a key made and the computer programed to it for $50.00

Yes it does.

My brother had a truck that his dealership sold that drove him nuts, it had a fit because when the new owner had a new key made it would read both keys and lock the system up.

So if you do this, make sure you do not put a chipped key in it again.

This is your best option 93baker. They are about 40 bucks here to get one made from the local locksmith shop. That way you avoid locking it up like 85_Ranger4x4 is talking about.

I'm happy my truck doesn't have it!
