can a 2wd trans be converted to a 4wd trans

i need to figure out if you guys know this, please let me know.

i have a 4wd 87 Bronco II with a bad manual transmission. cant find one used but there are some 2wd available.

will it work if you swap out the rear extention parts?

i know you can do it in newer ones but the main shaft is different so that needs to be swapped so if that is bad you are screwed otherwise you make sure the transfercase can bolt up and you're good. as i said this is for newer ones so i don't know if thats all you gotta do for yours

Swap the tail shaft and housing.

if its a 2wd out of a bii it should have a dummy case and be ready for your transfer case

Yea he is right. On the 2wd bii there is a dummy transfer case and you pretty much replace that with yours.

had a friend find one in a nearby town, he said it was from a ranger, should be same tranny, without any tcase.

i wanted to try and get that tranny, and swap out the rear extention from its cone shaped part to the 4wd adapter.

forgive my ignorance on the proper name of those parts, im wingin it-- and trying to save money.
