Ha I know what you mean about being stuck on the side of the road....:annoyed:

A catastophic failure of the synchro is indeed a major event, maybe
someone that's experienced it will post. Luckily, the synchro usually
gives a warning first, by emitting a chirp or squeak in the passenger side
wheelwell opening.

Mine was squeaking when I bought it, at 55K miles, so I replaced the
synchro before it could do damage. Not a hard job at all.

If yours isn't making noise, it's a hard call to replace or not; maybe
others will give their opinions......
How many miles on the truck?

i only have 68k right now. i just started surfing through the forums and saw a lot of issues with the synchro so i just wanted a little info on it....thanks a lot.

This is a good test. When the engine is cold (starts and squeals the most) remove the serpintine belt and start engine for a minute. If it squeals its the syncro. I bought mine with 64k and it squealed from day one, just did not know the problem until I did tune up, plugs wires, and got a miss the next day that started around 4500rpm and dropped to just over 3k. You will not get a check engine light prior to the castisrophic failure (or other syncro caused problems) as Ford does not monitor it for codes over 2500rpm. If it fails hard, Sensor wobbles and hits the opening; catches the metal side; it will shear the cam gear and stop the syncor from turning, which on the bottom end drives the oil pump. It will not shut the engine off, but you will lose all oil pressure, and destroy a motor. :annoyed:

If it squeals like a pig......put it out of its misery..........Look at it like insurance......Pay about $250 (if you can do it yourself, about $600 at dealer) or pay about $3500 when it goes and destroy the engine (plus tow and lost time waiting for wrecker, rental car while trucks awaiting engine, etc, etc).............Replace it.:icon_thumby:
