Camshaft position sensor

I have a 1993 ranger with a 4.0 and the previous owner removed the radio antenna and replaced it with an electronic one that sucks. I got a conventional antenna and couldn't figure out where to run the cable through the cowl panel into the interior so I proceeded to remove the center cover on the cowl panel under the hood. Well I dropped one of the bolts behind the engine (never did find it) and while reaching back there I noticed the camshaft position sensor isn't even plugged in. At least that's what I think it is. It goes into the back of the block or intake, and has a white rectangular connecter, about 4-7 pins. It looks like it hasn't been plugged in for a while either, I couldn't even find the pigtail for it. My question is, is it supposed to be plugged in or was it not used some years, and could it cause any problems? I have no cel and the computer only throws code 411. Also if someone could point me to where said cable enters the cab I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks guys
 
The CMP used on the EEC-IV 4.0s was a 3-pin plug. I frequently get it confused for a MAP or Baro sensor plug because of the similar shape and location in the harness (It looks very similar to the MAP sensor plug from the 2.9 and reaches to right where my MAP sensor used to be).

It was not used in all years, and it is possible that your truck has had the engine replaced with one from a newer year. The early years were the ones without a sensor, 93 they started showing up on California emissions vehicles, by 95 they were standard issue.

If the truck starts and stays running every time, instead of catching then dying right away about half the time and no light is on then the computer is not expecting to see a cam signal and you shouldn't need to worry about it.
 
Just the answer I was looking for thanks, and now that you mention it, yeah the plug does look similar to an older ford map sensor. Thanks, any idea on how to run an antenna cable from the cowl panel through the firewall to the radio? How'd the factory do it?
