I am running a stock '89 efi 302. The motor only has 79k on it but I would like to swap the cam when I have the motor out. Any recommendations as to a mild street strip cam for a street truck with an AOD would be helpful. I know what kind of debacle usually happens when the subject of cam choice is brought up but I'm open to any opinions.

Check out the Ford roller cams. I think you could get away with a E303 ok.

The most popular is the E-303 cam but there are better ones out there. Might want to look at the Comp Cam XE264HR. .512 lift on intake/exhaust with 212/218 duration @ .050 lift and 114 LSA, mild but MM & FF got 306HP using it on a stock motor (306 over bore). Carb'd also.

Uniontown, eh! I'm just up the road about an hour or so.

I'm running a Comp .512", 284 duration in a hopped up 351W. Idle's rough and the tires just won't stick to the road.....tough problems to have!!

PRP opens on Sunday and my Ranger is ready to rock!!

The Extreme energy cam that you mention is a hyd. cam. He needs a roller cam. I am sure there are better cams out there but that was the first one that cam to mind.

How much work and money are you looking to spend? At a minimum you'll have to change the springs. Really any cam that lets you use a stock stall speed isn't going to wake anything up or idle rough. If you want a fair to rough idle you are going to have to go to a higher stall speed. I know this won't help as you are looking for a roller cam but if you can find the roller version of the Comp 280H that is a decent cam that can be street driven without too much trouble.

the one thing i have found with stock tuning is the 303 cam was best for my use.

i went to the truck cam and pissed mysel off to no end.

cost about 280 to set up due to my heads for springs and shit too.:dunno:

the comp cam in a 4x4(roller version)is pretty good though.

my valves float way early so i need some different springs, but that dont effect it at 1800 rpm cruise.

most people that dont like the e for wheeling seem to have the valve timing off a bit and a big maf that dont work right.

Right now I am just throwing ain a slightly better cam. There will be a complete rebuild later. I'm not really happy about having an automatic so later there will probably be a t56 but that's all in the future. I work at a machine shop with an engine shop next door so the work isn't a problem but I'm just trying to get it going. I believe but not sure it is a flat tappet cam. I'm not going to switch to a roller yet because when I do put different heads on I will put in a complete roller valve train and then have to buy a different cam altogether. Just looking to get it going with a few extra ponies. I can change a cam in an eveining

Well it's a good thing that whole hydraulic roller thing made me think because it is a roller cam. Good think I didn't buy that cam last night that would have sucked.

This was the Comp Cam I had mentioned as a good replacement for the stock engine you have now, might work good with up-grades.

Ford 5.0 Xtreme Energy EFI XE264HR Cam

DESCRIPTION:
HYDRAULIC ROLLER: Mild street performance, good H.O. replacement cam. Works with O.B.D.4

Close! I am going with the xe266hr cam kit. The shop next to me can get it for warehouse distributor cost and I can't beat that. I'm getting the whole kit. so even though I wasn't going to pull the motor apart it looks like I will be going down that road. Why do simple projects always grow into big projects? Can you say "STOP SPENDING MONEY" I knew that you could!
