Cab swap questions.

I just got a couple of rigs (same body style) and one of them has the cab in really bad shape (an 81 F-350). The interior has had mice in it the metal is rotted and rusted everywhere and is bent up pretty bad. The other is in top notch condition, excelent interior, perfect body, no problems(an 84 F-150). I need the F-350 for work as it has the load capacity I need. The F-150 could be just for playing or a daily driver. Is there any legal issues that i will have to worry about swaping the good cab onto the other frame? Im not on here to often but any help would be much apreciated. If its just a swap over type job than I know a guy who has a good spare 87 ranger cab (the frame is twisted and bent badly) that i could convert to the F-150 frame.Thanks a million in advance.

The problem is unless you switch the VIN, your 1 ton with a 1/2 cab would still be rated as a 1/2 ton.

Switching VIN's is generally illegal BTW, you might have to do some calling around to see if it is possible though. Since you have titles for both cabs I would think it would be possible, but will be a fair amount of paper work.

What would the emblem swap matter? I would do that anyways but i was more so looking into the legal matters with the vin numbers. Correct me it I'm wrong, but I believe that the vin number is related to the frame of the vehicle, not the body from what my mother-in-law remembers from her days at the the licencing department days 25 some years ago. Maybe laws have changed since then, I don't know...But I'm starting to work on these rigs in about a week and a half and I'd like to know what all my options are before i start. I would prefer it to be a 1 ton in its looks, functionality and legality.

In maryland if you swap cabs it requires paperwork. the cab vin is what they go by. They issue you a new vin number and attach it to the cab by the striker plate
