hello all ,

well i went to the smog shop today and my truck failed due to : the 2 fails i recieved was EGR (Functional) and Fuel cap integrity test

Now I understand were the EGR is located, but I really need to either clean it out , find out why there is no vaccum, im just not sure were to start besides cleaning it and after cleaning it i have no way to test it out to see if that was the problem :(

The shop stated i need a Diag performed on monday at 8 am , its up to me they said ... 1.5 hours of labor just to find out and it will cost me $120 ..... THIS NEEDS TO BE DONE WITH BEFORE 1/31/2011.... or my Reg is going to be very very costly... I did look in the tech section and found that to check it i can suck on vaccum line ... but if its clogged .... i am going to need to go to the JY and get some broken speedomoter cable lol.. i did do a search and found the thread started by Blueovalboy89 helped a little but im new to this stuff .....

now that i have said all this who wants to place input?

just for refrence , here are my numbers for my 1989 ranger :

@ 836 RPM : %CO2= 10.5/ %O2=6.1 | HC(RPM); MAX=120/AVE=30/MEAS=18 | CO(%); MAX=1.00/ AVE= 0.10/ MEAS=0.00 RESULT PASS

@2552 RPM : %CO2= 11.9/ %O2=4.3 | HC(RPM); MAX=180/AVE=20/MEAS=40 | CO(%); MAX=1.00/ AVE= 0.10/ MEAS=0.00 RESULT PASS

and thanks in advance for any and all members that help me out with this !!!

Also check the EGR vacuum solenoid (sometimes called the EGR time delay switch). The contacts will have continuity with each other if it's good.

Put a vacuum to the EGR and make sure it opens and closes. The rangers had a big problem with the gas fill tube cracking, make sure no cracks in the rubber fill hose.If you find a crack, silicone and tape for a quick fix and try to find another, plus as was stated above about the continuity

You can generally clean the egr valve some

I have removed them and tapped the plunger to free it up if it is stuck...and then apply vacuum..( you can suck on the valve yourself while looking at it thru a mirror if you can't tell it's opening)...or feel it open and close...of course the vacuum will need to be present when the temp is correct..hopefully when u remove it..the gasket may be re-usable..but make sure you get a good seal when you re-attach it..get a new gasket if possible...or make one to get thru your test..anti-seize compound can help seal it as well..

The easy way to test the egr is to hook manifold vacuum up to it while idleing the engine should stall. Once the engine is up to temp the egr responds to throttle position TPS and engine vacuum or MAP. The egr position sensor tells the computer how far it is open. You can get a code reader for EEC-IV at the part store the KOER test will point you in the right direction but you can put a long screwdriver on the egr solenoid and listen for clicking while you work the throttle. A vacuum guage in line with a tee will tell you if it is getting vacuum to the egr. If you get no responce from the engine when you apply vacuum to the egr it could be a plugged tube, bad diaphram or sticking valve. If the tube is cracked or leaking I believe that is the same as a exhaust leak. Check replace all your vacuum lines and look for bad wires and connectors give it a good visual once over and repair all faults run the codes and run the codes KOER as the book says and it will check the egr and give you a clue. Or you can put about 5 oz of C-4 on the bottom of the 1/4 full fuel tank stand back light the cap and watch the show. CA and CO are about the worst for emissions so be nice to the test station attendant make sure the engine is fully warm. It is probably somthing simple and you dont need to sell your first born to have a shop fix it. I couldn`t see where it failed other than the fill cap those numbers looked pretty good to me what part on your report says fail. If your code reader says 11-1-11 change the O-2 sensor and run it through another test station. You need to pass both the physical and visual test make it look pretty when you take it in.

well i did some research and well .... i qualify for the california assistance program :) they will pay up to 500 dollars on any smog related repair for my truck ... all i need to pay is a $20 co pay :D im kinda happy and will just take it to the shop because $20 is much much cheaper than buying extra parts ..... but if for some reason i do not qualify ... ill go back to the drawing board:(

The 'income elligible' part of that program worries me but it's a moot point since mine passed smog.

Humm so your saying they pass strict laws for emissions and if you dont have the money the tax payers will cover it. Explain to me again why californica is broke. So hopefully the shop dont charge over $500 for a vacuum line and a gas cap.

hey i know i was going to piss people off with that statment but hey it saves me $120+ .... they said 120 just to diagnose .... so yea and yes i know it is a kick in the balls for tax payers ... i am one myself ... have 2 jobs that make a meer 1600 a month combined .... but i have a 7 yo. and a soon to be 5 yo. ..... I THINK ILL TAKE THE FREEBEE THIS ONE TIME !!!

again thanks everyone for the help ... i was looking at new EGR's and there 42.00 :) prety cheap if i need a new one

Sounds to me like kimcrwbr1 was passing judgement on California and the repair shop not on you. I agreee, if you need it use it. I just don't think I'd qualify.

well yea i figured ... just wanted to clear it up ... i admire all the help i have recieved ... i placed the same exact post on ranger-forums.com and on rangerpowersports.com.... this fourm was the most help ! thanks again guys
