CA Rules for 96 5.0 swap?

So If anybody saw my thread in 'Other' Engine Conversions I was planning on doing a 4.6 V8 Chevy motor in my 96 Ranger......Well I totally forgot I have smog/registration to do within the next month & I don't think I can complete the swap in less then that, so I am just going to do a 5.0

I am in California & unfortunately I do have to follow the smog rules to keep It street legal so with this being said....

Do I have to have a 96+ 5.0 motor or can it be a 95 motor?
How can they tell If Its a 95 instead of 96? (Only reason I ask this cause I found a couple complete motor/trannys for cheap on CL)
Can I use a mustang transmission? (Not sure what they are)
What years do I have to worry about the PATS system?
Does the swap involve tearing the dash out & chasing wires?

All I can help you with is that for anything to be emissions legal it needs to have an engine from the same year or newer.

Go to page one of this site for Rwenzing's info on Explorer swaps.

You do not need to touch the dash, other than to correct the tach. Pats info is in prev mentioned article, in a nice graph.
You can use a Mustang transmission of any kind. California may require you to use an Explorer 4r70W.
You'll have to search a California board, or use the telephone for more info.

word on the street, not to be relied on, is Ca requires same model year or newer, typically checked by reading the computer on OBDII vehicles.

I believe you can do the swap as long as you have the stickers under the hood and all the stuff working correct. You can call the DOL and find out what is acceptable It needs to pass a visual and the physical tests I believe you can get stickers at a ford dealership parts department. They will know if the cat has been hollowed out and you can usually tell the year of the engine by the part number the first two digits tell you the year say E3 is 83 f3 is 93 d=70s e=80s f=90s just look at the part numbers you find on the engine and find the most common first two digits
