Hey y'all I was just wondering if anyone knew what were the best CA legal headers for a 93 4.0 were. I've heard people talk about the pacesetter headers, and they seem like a good price, but none seem to be 50 state legal. I just recently had a Flow 40 installed, and love it, but I wouldn't mind more powa. I was also wondering how much louder we are talking about. I don't mind a nice deep rumble (which it now already has) but I don't want it to be obnoxious. My buddy has a 94 4.0 with CAI, headers, and a magnaflow dumped, and honestly its too loud. As I said I don't mind some deepness, but if you aren't doing 0-60 in like 4 seconds I don't feel its justified.
Also (and I asked this in another post) are the Flowmaster tips worth looking into? They cost like $10 less then the muffler costs, so I can't imagine they're worth it, aside from shiny-ness.

Damn nothing?
That's what I found too. Unfortunately these "legal" sets of headers are way out of my price range.. Also does anyone know what the legal smog requirement for the muffler is?
Everything I've seen suggests that what I have (Flow 40) is legal, there is no stamp or seal anywhere that proves anything?

Dont know anything about California and emisions as here in Arkansas we don't even have state safety inspection and I don't think they have heard of emmisions requirements here yet :yahoo: That said if the 50 state legal ones you are looking at are the JBA headers then according to Summit they are 14 instead of 16 guage like the pacesetters and on top of that they are stainless. Both of these facts, in theory should make the JBA a longer lasting header and less prone to warping. Unfortunately I can not speak from experiance as I am at the same point you are and trying to decide if the JBA's are really worth it.

Also in theory the thicker tubes on the JBA's should be a little quiter. And the dumps you refer to on your friends ride, are they dumped down? If so that will increase volume as will not having them exit all the way out from under the vehicle.

Sorry I can't answer your question but maybe that will give you something to chew on for a bit.

I don't see why any headers wouldn't be legal for your truck, as long as they don't leak and bolt to a converter.

Your 93 4.0 has no EGR.

My 94 has one, and my Hedmans have the bung, and are CA legal.

Dumb CA laws...

Idea...! Get headers for a 94, plug the EGR port, then you'll have the emissions sticker you need.

As far as best headers. I went with Hedmans, the middle option. Way better quality than Pacesetters, and don't cost the years salary the JBAs do.

Although there was a slight fitment issue. The flange between the left header and Y-pipe rub the transmission. Not really a big deal. Probably wouldn't rub an auto trans.

Copy and pasted from Jegs

"Hedman Standard-Duty Uncoated Headers are manufactured using 18 gauge, mandrel bent primary tubes (some models feature thicker 14 or 16 gauge tubing) and 1/4" flanges (some models have 3/8" flanges). The factory black paint applied to uncoated headers is for pre-installation protection only, not high-temp. For the ultimate protection against the elements, check out Hedman's original Hedman HTC Hi-Tech Coated Headers. "

I avoided these in my search as they are most likely 18 guage which is the thinest of the 3 headers being compaired. They also only have the 1/4 inch flange which can easily promote warping and exhaust leaks. Now I guess they might be 14 guage 3/8 flanges but I would verify that before I bought them however I am betting that they are saving the better materials for their higher priced headers which is probably only one or two lines of product so they can advertise the thicker materials. If someone has real personal experiance with these that may be differant but the people I have known who have used hedman have later replaced them.

I know I have not been particularly impressed with my Pacesetters, but they were the only ones I could get for a 2.9 4x4. I have never been able to get the driver's side to seal properly.

I know ALLAND has said he runs the headmans and hasn't complained about them. He also made his own copper exhaust gaskets though.

What ever you do, do not install Stage8 locking header bolts, or any stainless bolts for that matter. Use the steel bolts that come with the headers.

And don't use the paper gaskets that come with the headers, go with the Felpro gaskets for the stock manifolds. Or make copper ones as previously mentioned.

My Hedman gaskets blew out after a month. It was when I went to change them that a found ALL my stainless header bolts seized in my heads.

I am currently doing a port and polish job on a new set of heads, because a double head job is more feasible than redrilling and taping all the holes.

Good info. I noticed those hedmans use the stock collector, is the collector important to replace? Most other sets I've seen usually have the collector.

No they don't, my pic is without the y-pipe installed for ease of transmission removal. The headers came with a 2.5" y-pipe. The y-pipe does have the cat flange on the end of it too.
