Will a c5 stand up behind a 4.0?

No answer makes me wanna "try and see" lol

It just might.

The C5 is a stout transmission and if you build the guts to small block spec it will def hold up. Mustangs and Crown Vics used them behind the 5.0 for years.

I'm not sure if a 2.8 speced C-5 would roast or not.

I have a c5 behind my 4.0, I bought it used and had to rebuild it this year, but I had no idea how many miles were on it before.

It's a good tranny, if you don't mind no overdrive, it's easy to make work behind the 4.0
one thing that some might consider a negative is that behind the 4.0, the c5 (originally behind the 2.8) has a pretty high stall speed - like 2700-3000

the stall is great for offroad, but combine that with no overdrive on the street and you wont get very good mileage.

The main reason I used the c5- all I need is the right bellhousing, and I can put in a 5.0 later

My buddy wrecked his truck, told me I can have anything off it as long as I haul it to the junk yard for him.... 2.9 c5 manual case and hubs.... I don't need the 2.9 but I may hang on to it in case I find a ranger with blown motor ... I've been wanting the manual case. But I kinda like my 5speed.

i would never swap a c trans into anything but a toy:dunno:

the a4ld is easily able to handle 4.0 power with a proper build.

but i suggest a 700r4 unit built to v8 specs.

If nothing else the C5 might be worth something to someone wanting to put a RBV transfer case on a C4 or C5. The aftermarket adaptors are worth a decent chunk of change. Not that the Ford one is, but somebody out there might get some use out of it and the output shaft.

There is a difference between a V8 and a V6 C5 though, obviously the V8 is built stronger. Like Mr. Walter said, 3 speeds really only work for toys.

Well its not a toy, its more like a lawn ornament... for it to be a toy, it needs to be played with.
