I've got an 83 ranger 2.8 auto with a c5, When I got it last October I dropped the tranny pan and put a new filter and fluid in it, with a cork gasket. No problems until now. I noticed it after I went wheelin with froggy.I had to pull him out several time with a running start most of the time, never in reverse though! When it is cold it hesitates into drive, and it slips pretty bad through the low gears until it gets warm. This sounds weird, but when I turn left I will hear a moaning sound then it engages and does fine after that? It's fine when hot but I have noticed a loss of power some times when I'm driving. Fluid level is fine. I thought it might be whatever band that is responsible for the low gears, but I'm not sure. I know how to take tranny's in and out, but not adjusting or diagnosing. If it's on its way out would it be better to put in a c4 I can get to go worth the 289 I'm going to put in later:icon_confused:
Any help would be appreciated!:icon_thumby:

I have a c5/4.0 combo in my truck and I'm in a similar situation. The tranny slips alot - I have 5.13 gears and only 33" tires- I should be able to so some decent burnouts with that combo and a 4.0, but I cant even get the tires to break on asphalt. not that I'm into burnouts, but that's the only real experience I can add since I haven't done much wheeling with the c5 yet.

It sounds like you might need a rebuild

I know the v6 c5 tranny differs from the v8 c4 and c5 trannys in the number of clutches-v6 c5 has only 3, v8 c4 has four, and v8 c5 has 5. I believe this to be the cause of our trannys slipping, especially when they get worn and well used.

I am also planning to add a v8 motor and to rebuild the tranny- there's a couple ways to go about it -
1. take the bellhousing, torque convertor, and valve body from a v8 c4 or c5 and put them on the v6 c5 when you rebuild it - you will also need the clutch drum from the v8 tranny - preferebly a c5 (5 clutches) I was told that any c4 rebuild kit will work

2.take the tailshaft and housing off of your v6 c5 and put it on a v8 c4 if your going to keep your current transfer case.

the easiest way would be to buy a built c4, like B&M or other from summitracing or somewhere for about $800-1000, then add your tailshaft to that tranny. If you know a good tranny guy, just rebuild the tranny you have and add the v-8 parts. If you take to a tranny shop, you'll probably get charged more than the $1000 you could get the new built tranny for.

Thanks Slammer, I'm buying the 289 this month, but I'm still a few months off for the v8 build, I'm trying to find a fix till then any ideas? Thanks again

Ok Ok....

when you replaced the filter did you put the O rings on it?
When cold oil is thicker and harder to suck through a felt filter, I always recc. a screen type filter.

did you use type H fluid?

I put whatever it came with, the filter was a screen filter. I do remember that. It was last October, can't quite remember everything, I used whatever fluid it called for on the dipstick and in the manual. Dextron/mercron? Thanks for your help.

I took it upon myself to adjust the low/reverse and myself since everywhere wanted like 125.00 to do it. It was a PITA at first, but then I figured I could get a 19mm ratchet wrench and hold the nut while I used a 8mm and hold the bolt. and adjust it out. I adjusted it the first time and it didn't seem to do anything, then I said the hell with it and tightened the adjusting bolt all the way in and It didn't like that very much, barley made it back home. So then I adjusted it out 1 turn and whalah, Like a charm. I had so much time after that I installed a ground wire to my off road lights instead of using the bolt to ground them to, and then I adjusted them. They look good. It still slips a little when it's cold and this is only a band aid till I get my 289 with the c-4.
