ok im working on seting up a 84 ranger c5 now i search the forum but im no transmission guy so i like to ask a few ?

ok i know the bell has to be swap to a c4 i thank i have a bell

as for the valve body i know i have to swap to a c4 valve body is it a bolt in thang or do have to mod the transmission to use the c4 valve body i dont made my mind up im going with a Ford C4 Manual Valve Body Forward Pattern

i know i need a c4 torque converter but do i need to chang the input shaft or anythang

am i missing anythang or is that the jiffs of it

So you have a c4 and a c5 already?

I have this setup, it's a 84 bronco 2 c5 with a c4 valve body (77 I think) - and no mods to put the c4valve body on - but I used the c5 pan on the c4 because it has the hump, which is supposed to keep the tranny from starving at different angles - this requires a special filter, look for a c4 filter with a c5 pan.

the torque convertor has to match the bellhousing- i.e. you cant use a c4 t/c in a c5 bell as the c5 bell is deeper.

your c4 must be a case fill trans where the bellhousing bolts to the front pump bolts and not with separate bolts outside the pump - or the c5 bell wont bolt up

if the c4 is past 73, it'll have the same spline front shaft - but the c5 shafts are supposed to be all hardened, but not all the c4 ones are.

If you had both trannys already, and wanted the best setup - use the c5 case - it has better oiling, use the c4 valve body with a shift kit, or search for burly 4x4 mods (poor mans shift kit) I did that and it works great. If your c4 is from a v8 vehicle, take the foreward and direct drums and put in the c5 case - they have more clutches. probably not needed with the 2.9, but I plan on a v8 in my trucks future. use the c5 hump pan or a c5 deep pan with a filter that matches.

make sure you use a cooler - i just put in an aux cooler in addition to the rad cooler

now this is all assuming the c5 is the v6 version from the bronco2/ranger and that it's going in your 88 b2 with a 2.9 - if this is for a v8 swap - thats a whole other can of worms

ok so it might be easier to just use the c4, if it came off of a v8, then put your c5 tailshaft and housing on it. but to get to the tailshaft, you have to take the whole tranny apart to get to the snapring that holds the tailshaft in.
