Long story short, I got a tranny from a buddy of mine, pan fill C4 that already had the c5 output shaft and adapter installed for a v8 swap in my ranger. I tore the tranny apart, replaced clutches, seals, bands, etc and new tci torque converter. I used a c4 valve body that I already had with shift kit. Tranny just looked like normal wear and tear inside, nothing out of the ordinary. Put it in the truck, with new 5.0 swap, shifts great, pulls great, solid engagement, but tranny overheated. This on a 1.5 hour shakedown run. I figured I had kinked a cooler line, but after pulling lines loose from case, I have no fluid circulating to cooler. There was some residual fluid in the lines, so it had circulated a little, but nothing coming out now while running, in any gear. Fluid diagram looks like drain back valve, converter pressure relief valve could be releiving prematurely, or converter check valve is plugged/not operational. Am I missing something? I swapped in another known good valve body tonight to rule out some of the above. What is the location of the converter pressure relief valve (valve body?) and the converter check valve (pump housing?). I'm afraid I am going to have to pull this tranny back out and look at the gasket between the pump and case, and doublecheck the passages in the pump housing.

Ok, the converter discharge check valve passage must be plugged. It is located in the pump housing and is the only thing between the pump and the cooler line passage. No fluid flow to the cooler makes for an unhappy tranny. I have it out and apart and will have to have the plug drilled out of the pump housing and the cavity cleared to repair it. Fluid test pressures looked good in all ranges. About 100 psi in park and drive, 120 in 1 and 2, and 200+ in reverse. From 100 up to 200+ with modulator unplugged.
