im not worry about overdrive but is a c3 stronger than an a4ld and if so how hard would it be to swap in 89 4x4

umm, there is a c3 ford tranny, but i think it's pretty weak and I don't think was ever offered in 4x4.
several people, including myself, have swapped in a c5 because it came in rangers/b2's from the mid 80's and is a bolt it swap, its a v-6 version. there is also a v-6 version of a c-4 that came in mustang II's if you can find one of those, but not offered in 4x4.
search for c5 swap, you'll get lots of info.
I do have an adapter to mate a c-4 tranny with your transfer case, though if your interested.
