Ok, here's what I got. A 1979 c-4 freshly rebuilt and in the truck. Reverse is great. Put in drive and kinda just surges and trembles until I tach it up and finally pulls off. Shifts thru the gears ok but when it gets in drive it will not stay there, drops back to 2nd unless I'm on the gas kinda hard. It feels as though it is slipping in 2nd when it changes and then finally it will level out after a few seconds.
I turned the modulator valve all the way in and I swapped out the valve body to another one that I had. Help!

Who rebuilt the trans? If you already adjusted the modulator, how about a vaccum leak? Also could be a seal is bleeding off somewhere internally. Honestly it will probably need torn apart and gone over, it's in the process of burning up if it already hasn't.

Sounds like you may have a forward clutch pack problem. The little check ball in the forward drum piston is noted to fail, also could be sealing rings and lip seal could of been cut when assembled.

I would take the vehicle back to who ever built the transmission.
Also who installed it??

I installed it and my wife's uncle who is a reputable trans. builder rebuilt it. Both of you guys are saying pretty much what I've heard so last night I snatched it out so we could tear it back down....I will update my findings in case you're interested...

Sure, Try to get some pics of it disassembled if you can.

ok. we will tear it down tonite or tomorrow night....I hope....I am ready to ride....

well, we got it tore down last night and I forgot to bring the camera but what we found so far is a fried clutch pack and the governor was stuck. more to come.....
