byrons "ranger#1" 4x4 long travel build up

don't ya mean "stitched....tryin' to look like TIG'ed....MIG welds".....

have you even took a welding class?

l8r, John

Was this towards me?

Never taken a dedicated welding class. I don't have one of those fancy MIG welders either. Here's a couple stick welds you can find under my truck.

I understand the process he's using, I just don't understand why. Why not tack it in place and burn it in nice and hot?

Gotta be a member to view that page.

I understand that cosmetics are a big part in the automotive industry, but I don't think it'd be that big a selling point when it comes to structural members.

It'd take half the time to just weld em up than to stitch em. Less labor hours and higher production. Sounds like a winner to me.

but these kids dont kno the diff. shure a smooth constant bead would be best not to say mine wont hold but its not aesthetically pleasing and that is worth $$$$$$

1. You are also a kid...
2. It doesn't sound like you really do either.
3. If it were my ass on the line, my foremost priority would be a strong weld, not a goofy-looking "aesthetically pleasing" weld.
4. I don't think your welds are aesthecially pleasing.

beacuse looks sell

If you think looks are more important than strength, then you need to look for a new line of work. You are building suspension components for a crowd that plans to beet the living snot out of their rig and keep on truckin. Any vehicle that will intentionally see some air time, needs to have a suspension that has welds that are more than just aesthetically pleasing. If I was running a fab shop, and one of my fabricators said that looks are more important that strength he wouldnt be working for me anymore.

but these kids dont kno the diff

Then educate them. Dont take advantage of their ignorance.

looks arent everything you know, function and durabilty are at the top of my list, if it looks like shit but functions great and is strong i could care less

heck no Bray....this was totally toward's Ranger #1.....

and yes Ranger#1, i do know what a proper weld should look like.....i've only been welding for 25+ years... stick, TIG, and MIG...certified in all 3 processes....and am subject to recertification every 2 years because of Federal Regulations.....

and like others have said....pretty don't get ya home.....quality does....

there's a lot of hypocrites in this thread.....

his work is far better than a lot of the junk that everyone praises here, but his work is not up there with camburg like he thinks.

He isnt being criticized harshly because of what he has posted in this thread necessarily. He is being bashed because he as criticized other people in different threads, because it doesnt look as pretty as his. if he is going to criticize someone else's work he better damn sure he has all his ducks in a row.IMO. I am not saying I have any room to judge his work, but I am saying his "Looks Are More Important" approach is bullsh*t.

Here is a link to thread where he bashed on a tried and true design simply because is was aesthetically pleasing to him. This method has been used by many, and it works no matter how cheesy it may look.(IMO they look damn good anyway.lol)

I agree with you on his "tude", his stuff looks pretty good, welds look like their getting good penetration and the design seems like it can take abuse but his work isnt on par with his ego. Camburg stuff is beautiful, strong and time tested; he isn't quite there with them fab wise, but he thinks he is with his ego. also, I was in no way taking a shot at your arm setup. I know they are strong, simple and are proven worthy, and you aren't among the posters I was aiming for anyway. other posters are bitching about his work in here and are defending their pals with "less than stellar"(just to be nice) fab in another.
