I have a 1988 Ranger 2.9 XLT that would not go into 4x4 when I got it, but when it did it got stuck there. I decided to get a look at the transfer case and it has the drive shaft with the dual universal nearest the transfer case and it appears to have been separated before so I replaced it with a transfer case I had. The one I replaced it with has a (looks like a PTO on a tractor) slip like shaft out of it. I think that the one that looks like a PTO is a BW1350 and the dual universal is a BW1354, am I correct?

1350 and 1354 are almost identical externally. The biggest noticeable difference is that the 1350 has a splined hole in the front for the front drive-shaft to slide in (likely the one that came off the truck) and the 1354 has a u-joint flange on the front for the drive shaft to bolt on.

i think the shift linkages differ slightly as well, but as long as the shifter is taken from the donor of the 1354 there is no customization needed.

I assume you're talking about the front driveshaft output, and yes, the 1350 has a slip yoke and the 1354 has a u-joint yoke. They both have flanges on the rear output.

EDIT: beat me to it, fml and my method of opening 5 or 6 tabs off of the thread list and going through them one at a time

There is a PTO shaft coming out the front of the T-case and the drive shaft slips onto that shaft. The splined hole is part of the drive shaft. Okay I think I got it.....maybe

EDIT: Or Uh, I think I might have that backwards?:icon_idea:

And by the way thanks:icon_thumby:

F5 is your friend.

not all 1350's were slip yoke the one i just put in my rager came out of a high rider and it had a fixed yoke like the 1354 just smaller. just thought i would add my 2cents.

nice addition. I did not know that.

is the slip yoke or the fixed yoke better.
I need to get a drive build, and wondering if its worth a transfer case swap

The fixed yoke setup is a little more versatile (more driveshaft options available), but unless you plan on big V8 power, the strength difference between them isn't all that great.
