hi. i got a 94 ranger, 4x4, 4.0L,front manual hubs.lever on the floor(non-elect) and standard shift

my problem started as i was driving on the road i was hearing a small grinding noise.sounded like the transmission. anyways. i check the fluids,no metal chavings and the oil was good color. so i drove it like that until sumthing breaks

now... i drive on the road then i loose any gear, 1st,3rd,4th.... folowing with the same grinding noise. even wen it is in neutral it grinds. now the funny part. the only place i can put it go it dosent grind is the 4LO on the t-case. on 2HI or 2wd it will grind or make a bang and goes forward. i can drive on the road too and feels like a trans slipping. revs then does the bang as it falls back to normal. whatever i choose the 4 LO works excelent.

would be my t-case being broken or lever bushing?

i know its the t-case as the sound comes clearly from there.

is there any body had this problem before? oh and my truck has 190000km (about 150000milles us)

I had this problem just before this past x-mas, it started with loosing reverse unless i was in 4lo, and then moved on to loosing all forward gears unless using 4lo. I picked up a working unit from a salvage yard.

when I opened the old t-case the fluid came out real black and thick, further looking showed that most of the parts had been overheated at one time and the gear teeth were pretty chewed up.

besides myself your the 2nd person i have heard have this problem, the other was on an explorer and opening the t-case showed the same indicators as mine. Oh, take a look at the tag on the t-case and see what it says. the explorer's and mine were both J-2A. I'm trying to see if there is a common on this problem.

Cheers,
Blurr

:icon_thumby: i fought i was the only one too lol. it is the exact same thing. i check for a tag but there is not one on it. but i know its a bw 1354 manual. i think the previous owner have changed the fluid in it. the also broke the small bolt that srew in the transmission :icon_confused: i fought maybe the lever wasent into the selected gear properly and destroy sumthing.

as i think i do have the same problem as yours i will look for a used one.thanxs man

I'm guessing I'm the Explorer you were talking about. I too took mine apart and found a broken oil pump supply hose as the initial problem. Lack of oil to the upper end caused a worn range shifter fork. Once worn, the fork is able to "flop" from high range to neutral causing your issue. Replacement of the parts is simple and can be done by grabbing parts from a 1354E-shift case. The oil pump hose is available from the aftermarket fairly cheep. Here's the thread... and I'm not the only one either. http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=52284

EDIT: that was the first transfercase I trashed. Good thing I repaired it and kept it aside as a spar as this past winter, I piled up that replacement case which in turn took out the transmission. Yup, I'm up to TWO cases in under a year! :P
