Found a 2003 4x4 with 200xxx miles on it. I've got every intention of tossing a 302 into it but using a newer (99-01) explorer engine seems to be kind of a pain. If I use an older setup from a 96-97 explorer and use a carburate it will I be able to dodge a lot of the headache associated with the newer swaps?:icon_welder:

Wow it seem to me that a carb setup would be way more of a pain in the yea, over doing a EFI setup. :D Any ways good luck.

Why would doing a carb setup be more difficult?

If you are carbing it, probably wold not matter if the engine came from an '01 Explorer or a '69 Torino.

Withe last of the Ex Engines, your fuel system, motor mounts, Exhaust and most likely speedometer are all taken care of.

I would guess you would be after a manual transfer case instead of the Ex AWD.

For ease of use, it screams for an Explorer engine.

But certainly, it could be done any way you choose.

Buy the truck!

The thing that bugs me the most is the stupid AWD tcase. I need a truck again... my car has around 3-4" of ground clearance so when it snows I'm not going anywhere. I want a 96-97 but i cant find one for sale that isn't in totally crap shape. So I think I may be stuck with this 03 simply cause its all I can find. (checked autotrader ebay and craigslist) Unless you guys know anyone near Detroit that is selling a truck.

You will have to change the fuel system around to make it work with a low pressure carb setup. You will need to figure out how to tap into the wiring harness to get key hots that stay hot while cranking to engine to start and then finding the wires for the gauges to work. You will need to get a intake, carb & a dizzy to put on the engine and depending on what you get that could cost alot. I know its not alot of things but some times its the smallest things that are the most headaches. With the Explorer EFI computer system its just about a plug and play thing. I would use the 96 to early 97 Explorer computer so you dont have to deal with the PATS system.

I put a 91 mustang efi setup in my 2000 no problem, a good wiring diagram for both cars is a must.

Mike, did you keep any sketches you would like to share? I'm staying with the Explorer system but would sure be willing to drawing them up on the computer to share with others. Not working so I have all the time till Spring.

Mac I used the Harwood book it is stright forward, only thing, my truck was a flex fuel so some of the colors were not the same but still easy with the wiring diagram.
