burnt valve

I know the ground strap goes to the last intake stud...it should have a threaded end on it...as for the other "wire" that is probably the oil sending unit...

I might have time to snap a picture but it is getting dark...will see what I can do...

Thanks. I figured that they go on the stud but can't tighten them down. I think they both go on the threaded stud.

Well, yours may be slightly different than mine...I took a pic of mine but remember this is a carbed application...and you will notice the carefully shaped grounding strap on mine that took years to perfect...:)

The oil sending unit is right beside the ground strap connection...those were the only two that I had to remove to take the head off mine...

I have a bolt with a stud that goes into intake. Also have a nut for it. But I can't get the grounds tight. Yours is a little different. How did you get your ground tight? Did you put on a washer or something?

I actually put two washers on either side...you can probably see that in the image...but the ground strap had a little burr on the end that was, I suppose, meant to stop it from spinning...but it just got in the way so I filed it off and used the washers...

If you have some dielectric grease you might want to put some of that on...or vaseline...or even silicone spray...the washers can rust and cause more problems if not treated.

Yea I seen that little thing. Looks like it goes into a groove somewhere. I might just take bolt back out and put both wires there and tigthen down. I wish I would have payee more attention to exactly how they where. I thought they would be in a little groove somewhere.

Anybody know exactly how the wires go? Do they need to be tight?

not sure about where they go, but they are ground wires so being tight is critical to their function...sorta like loose battery terminals...

I got it running. Now I have a problem with the starter. Its a new starter and new solenoid on firewall. Most the time it works but sometimes it won't engage at all just spin. But if you turn motor by hand then try it again it will start up. Anybody have any ideas of what this could be?

If it is spinning but not engaging then the bendix is going south...I used to rap mine with a hammer or the handle of a screwdriver...and that worked until it finally carped out...get a spare from the junkyard if you can find one...or buy a new one...my last one was rebuilt and cost around $90...but that was about 7 years ago

The bendix is in that little housing on the top or side of the starter where the juice plugs in...sometimes it simply sticks and works indefinitely after a good rap...and sometimes it just works until you spend your last dime on something else and then it decides you can't afford to buy one at the moment before finally giving up the ghost...

I used to carry a spare starter and alternator all the time...

Helps if you drive a standard because you can jump it...so always park on hills until you can get a new one.

It is a 5 speed. Also I did try hitting it with a hammer. Its a brand new starter with lifetime warranty I took it back yesterday to get another but it tested good and they won't give me another. But I don't know. Do these need to be shimed? Also when I bought this starter it was because old starter was doing exact same thing. So it is the starter going out again?

Under the above circumstances, I'd say maybe not...you said if you crank the engine it does actually start...so you may have a damaged flywheel...remove the starter and crawl under with a flashlight and have someone turn the motor by hand...follow all safety measures...of course...but look through the starter opening in the bell housing and see if you can detect any damage to the flywheel...

You did mention the starter was spinning...when you turn the key...so that's the only other variable that I can think of...it isn't that complicated...

Ok I have one more problem to fix. The truck will start and run but it idles really rough and has no power. The guy I took it to said the valve was bad and also it had two bad injectors. I fixed the head. But I put a screwdriver to the injectors and they are all clicking. There is no vacuum leak and pretty sure timing is right. I moved it a tooth left and right still runs the same. And all timing marks are lined up. Also the whole ignition is practically new. So am thinking still bad injectors. It starts every time and will idle but really rough.

did you fix the starter? was it loose by any chance? had that happen to me and corrected it by tightening the top bolt...

Anyway...on to your new problem...the injectors would give you not only rough idle, but poor acceleration...and also a lean condition that could cause further damage to the head. Could also be your plug wires are not in the proper position...it would be like incorrect timing but easier to fix...check the firing order and make sure they are set up correctly...I did that once and had #3 and #4 on the wrong post of the dizzy...started up and ran but it was really rough...

Other than that...sorry...I have limited experience with FI on a Ranger and would hope someone with more understanding would offer some suggestions...

Yea they are in the right firing order. When I first got it running I drove it and it did have poor accleration and had a pinging when you put it to the floor so like in 4th gear I could only hit like 55 but it was pinging am guessing spark knock or per ignition. The oil is full and it had a bad lifter but that was fixed.
