i have an 06 ranger, i had the valve problem 2 times. after i had the heads fixed the first time it started burning oil, not to much though, well i had to do the heads a second time finding out they didnt serface them the first time thats why i had to do them again, but i was telling the that it started burning oil and he said sometimes when you take heads off the block relaxes and it kinda ovalizes the cylinders making the rings not sealing the way it should. well now after getting it back together it burns alot of oil.i dont see how the cylinders could do ovalize that much more after taking them off a secont time, plus now when i start it after sitting a few hours it kind puffs out smoke out the exahust but does not smoke while driving. kind like oil is settling on top of the pistons. i wondering if it has anything to do with the pcv valve cause when i took it apart i noticed alot of oil in the intake manifold.any ideas, oh and i thonk its the pcv valve, its on the back side of the driver side valve cover and has a hose goin to the upper intake manifold, i wonder if its this cause i broke the plug off of it, i also noticed the older ones dont have that plug on it, and when i tried to buy one from auto zone the one they gave me didnt have a plug. thanks

What I am hearing is you have had a shop take the heads off twice and do valve jobs on them both times..
Well the guy did tell you near the truth. Every time you reinstall heads the different torque and the relaxing of the block while the heads are off can make the cylinders a little different than they were from the factory.
However it is a rere thing for that to make the engine burn oil. Not unheard of but rare.
The puffs of smoke when starting usually means the valve seals aren't working OR the valve guides are very worn.
I think I would be talking to that shop! I'd be wanting the same amount of oil burning that I had when I took it in there.
Then the pcv.. YES you need it to be in good condition.

i had 2 shops do the heads, the first im not to sure about, the second shop has a very good method to make sure the valve guides are good, he presureizes them make sure they wont leak. so thats why i didnt believe its the guides, also any input on the pcv being pluged into the wire harness, doesnt seem like it is on many cars.

The smoking after setting for an hour or more is almost always valve seal. One or more must have been damaged / badly seated. The PCV valve and intake with heavy oil is a sign of blow-by. The compression rings are worn and allow gas pressure to pass by causing the oil in the pan (already being slung around by the crank to be atomized and sucked up in the cank case venting, this is why you see oil in the intake.

That makes sense but how can the rings be bad when only has 80k miles on it.

Questions but not a lot of information..
1. Does it have the stock intake and filter system?
2. Do you offroad it, as the photo shows?
3. Who put the heads back on each time.
4. Why were the heads taken off the first time?

Please give us a little more to work with.

i have a k&n intake on it, i only sometimes offroad it, and i put the heads on, and yes i torqed them to spec, im sure you heard the valve problem a few years of the rangers had so thats why i did them the first time and i think they did it again cause they didnt serface them so it was burning water.
