Can overfilling the engine damage the rings? I was an idiot and overfilled it and ran a few miles before I bothered to actually check it. A few days after I drained and re-filled it it starting idling really rough and now it creates quite a nice blue cloud as it runs. Smoke comes out of the crankcase via the dipstick tube and PCV as well.

That's about the only I can think of, but wasn't sure it was possible....

change the PVC

How much "Over" was it??

was a compression check done?

3 quarts :fie: Yeah.... the oil light came on and instead of checking the oil, i put more in.. It stayed on, I put more in..... not my brightest moment.

I'm not really sure why it came on, but I changed out my P/S pump, so in the process of unbolting that bracketry I had to pull the dipstick tube part way out. That's the only thing i can think of that would have set it off.... but I didn't think there was a sensor for that. I'm almost positive the light went out for a few minutes, but It's been a few weeks. I've just been riding the bike in the meantime.

No I haven't done a compression check. Man I'm getting forgetful. That used to be one of the few things I knew how to do, lol.

of course! you dont want your car to provide improper lubrication do you? it will if you overflow it with oil. but it really depends on how much you overflow it. little is fine. someone said a cup. a cup would be generally fine. but if you go farther than that, i would imagine it would cause a problem.

OK then....

I know this wouldn't be the right way to fix it, but could I run some 10-40 or 20-50 oil and be better off?

3qt....Uffta...thats bit much.

How much have you driven it?? before with overfill and after??

if, not much since swapping out the oil and filter after your "awakening".

then you could just still have a overwash still in the cylinders....so drive it abit and if the smoking should tame down after a 10-15 min drive...with no side affects, noisier valves, anything that seeems out of the norm....then maybe get nervious.

better still pull the plugs and see how much come flying out when turning it over....then do compression check.

maybe new plugs too, the old ones are prolly fouled

I've driven it more than 15 min since I flushed the oil. Im pretty sure the plugs are fouled, as I mentioned, it idles rough.

Gotta borrow a buddy's compression tester...

When the oil dipstick sleeve on my '87 BII rusted away, it became disconnected at the block, but didn't look disconnected at the top. I added about 2-3 quarts too much oil also (dipstick was sliding down the side of the engine, giving an empty reading). I probably drove this way for 100+ miles before figuring it out. No damage to the engine.
Yours may be different.

may want to remove the upper intake to and give it a good cleaning. the PVC may have puked and allowed a fair amount of oily residue in there. If there is already some carbon build up in there, now with that new oil influx is just going to make things worse...so I could see that you're still fogg'n skitters.

I changed the PCV valve and ran a can of seafoam through a vacuum line. No noticeable difference. I need it today, so I'm gonna drive it around a bit and see if anything changes. If not, I'll have to grab that compression tester.

The check oil light is still on too.... I'm not sure why.

Is it a oil level light...or check engine light? just clearifying
Believe that later models had a check oil level sensor in the side of the oil pan. Check the connection, it may have just gotten unplugged, or bad wire.

It may boil down to replacing the sensor in the pan.

It's the Oil light, not the Check engine light. I'll check the wiring when I get a chance.

i would do new plugs straight away. if they are fouled it would run poor. you could also try to get some fuel injection intake cleaner. you use it when the truck is running with the intake tube off. that might help if you don't want to take the upper intake off. check the whole air intake system if you do. clean you t-body to. that might help
good luck
