I have a 91 ranger with the 2.3. so far i have done away with the waste spark head, went to a 89 mustang d port thats been cleaned with a mild port and polish. I changed from the stock roller cam to a johnson's machine shop .510 roller cam with 282 duration, double valve springs, and titanium keepers. I have a brand new bottom end pistons, rods, rings, ect. My question is how should I feed it fuel? I have an EFI setup with 19# injectors port matched intake and a cold air setup with a 3.0 mass sensor to match the injectors. The computer is from the mustang and I have read that the "mcu" is good for 17# injectors? On the exhaust side im running a manifold from a 97 2.3, with 2" pipe and a single chamber flowmaster, and no cat. I haven't put it in the truck yet so can anyone give me an idea on how its gonna run? Also whats the take on the EFI? would a carb and dis be a better idea for this setup? Thanks. any and all ideas are welcome. :headbang:

the mustang computer should work if you are using matched components I.E. 19lbs injectors with a mass air calibrated for 19lb injectors.
but sometimes drivability suffers. also what is your lobe seperation on the cam 112,110?
on the v8 you can use a came under 112 but it doesn't like it. there is to much reversion in the manifold. I don't know if having a 4 cylinder will exagerate that or not.
(more degrees of crankshaft rotation per each cylinder fire)

as far as the carb setup is concerned you can mod the lower fi manifold and get a spacer and run a 2 barrel holley or a weber 2 barrel and if you know how to tune a carb it will run fine. the weber will probably get you better mileage since you are only running on the 1 barrel during cruise.

not sure about my seperation, being a johnson's cam they only gave me certain info. lol and if i ran a carb setup i have a holley 500 with matched intaked. im just trying to get feedback and other ideas. as far as my EFI setup i have a flashed ecu for the injectors and matched mass.

Looks like it will spin. No rules?

Mill the head. To the intake bolts if you want. Bumps compression a bit so premium or e-85/93octane mix may be req'd.

Make sure the ports in your exhaust manifold are bigger than & centered on the ports from the head.

If your intake can fit it (same TB as 4SQ intake) swap to a 65mm(?) TB from a SuperCoupe or 4.6 Mustang. Not much for added power but good for throttle response.

Unless your running short burst WOT (1/4mi) I'd stay with EFI. Its easier to tune over a wide RPM range with some kind of tuner. If if the EFI is from the '89 Its a Speed Density EEC-IV & the MAF is not needed but the SD will limit you.

What year Mustang ECU? <='90 is TFI. What ignition your running? (TFI/DIS) DIS/EFI would be nice if it gets wet a lot.

I would go carbed with your mods.I think I would also go with a little better header as the stock one gets pretty restricted up in the rpm range.Shoenfeld makes a nice under body header that works well in a ranger

ok. thanks for the ideas guys. Does anyone have info or pics on the 4.6 throttle body? How about IAC and TPS? Do they match up, any mods or wires to splice? Also how about throttle cables? And I haven't decided on ignition yet, I was thinkin about the TFI from the mustang.... any restrictions with it, any gains? My thinking was with the dis i could dial in the cam a little better than opposed to the DIS setup...

Ok thanks i will do some research and see if I cant manufacture something to work. lol And I have decided to run the TFI setup... Any tricks I should know about this setup? I have never ran the dis with fuel injection, anything special about the map sensor i should know?

So guys here is the update... Got the 2.3 back in the truck and it runs great with the DIS system. I had to advance the cam 8 degrees to make it idle but now it seems to be doing just fine.
