Among my very many hobbies is one of my oldest, and that is cutting rocks & gems. Or "non-ferrous" machining. It's a thing. A big deal in the right discipline. At my highest point I was cutting diamonds, both natural & man made. For science. What a crazy job that was, but I digress, this project is simply for my rock collecting hobby. Being surrounded by wet rock saws in my youth one can never forget the endless adopted grandparents and the smell of kerosene. Not the old folks, they all smell like mothballs. The wet saws all used kerosene. These days plain old light weight motor oil. These are commonly re-engineered, repaired and reclaimed. To purchase a new one is not going to happen BIG $$. Thankfully the blades are cheap compared to what they used to go for.

Here is the $7000 / 24" version. The belt guard is a huge turn off, but required. My design will only have a single belt allowing for separate feed motor at the rear. The front round red thingy is the lead screw (3/4") right angle bearing. This is a Highland Park machine made in Massachusetts, USA.

This older machine uses a round shaft carriage supports with bushings, as the newer catalogue unit uses the square tubing supported by ball bearings. The bulkhead support is simple welded construction. The moving carriage has 2 seperate axis. Fore & aft (feed), and left & right (thickness). Squareness as with any auto or manual fed saw is key, so final adjustments will need to be available, but carriage symmetry will need to be dead on. These parts can also be purchased. Main drive I can do easily with pillow blocks. The 2HP motor I found may be too high RPM (3750). Typically a 1750 RPM motor is under driven 7:1 in this design.

This saw belongs to Miguel, a tradesman who is putting himself through electric engineering school (EE) by repairing and sawing ($20/slice) of any sort of rock you name it. He has much equipment for sale, operates a sort of clearing house for anything Myan to modern, lapidary to "holistic" (folks these days believe in weird stuff). He is sawing some pieces of agatized palm wood that I found in my backyard. See pic>

Yes it comes with a cup holder, 40 long x 36 wide. Ready for more stripping. It's steel. Might be time for the sawzall.

Well been a few days, but things are moving. I purchased some material, such as some linear rail with sliders for each of the 2 axis. It's an over kill, but it will be operated in a well oiled environment, just somewhat of a particulate rich with rock saw dust. All you 3D printer types already are familiar with the vast amount of aluminum extrusion and all the incredible amount of robotic solutions.

Those are the 25mm size, placed on the small side of the extrusion will give lots of gusset strength for the slide. Moving through the metric part of this project you know. I have a 13" long piece of 7075-T6 aluminum for the drive shaft combined with 2ea 1-3/8ths (35mm) pillow block bearings. A new steel unit is over a hundred $$, but I believe I can machine up something that will be just as good. I did discover a 3450 rpm motor, new old stock for $30. But the factory speed is typical at 1750.

So far stripping the chassis is going slow, but the weather is finally good & looking forward to starting in with the sawzall. Steel 16 awg sheet & some 1-1/8ths square tubing from the scrapyard is next for purchase. My shear is a Milwaukee jigsaw! I wish someday to have a metal shop, but I know others that have what I require. I do have a small 8x19 lathe however that takes care of me pretty good. Newer designs attempt to employ newer type electronics, hydraulics, but they won't last as long as these wet saws typically do. A VFD may be used to get the motor speed down.
 
Like a hard drive DEC? Or printer? It's some sort of a surgical instrument reprocessing station. Made in Italy by Johnson & Johnson. It's 95% humidity this morning and 72 degrees. Wonderful weather for growing a rash! You can hear the mildew growing.

Oddly enough I ended up with a 10" Jet bench grinder with 8" lapidary wheels on it... New those wheels are kinda dumb priced but if you have any interest in them I could make you a deal... I'm more for metal work than rock work so just need some standard wheels...

My wife likes rocks, the river near me (Willamette) has a bunch of gravel bars we go looking for agates when we go boating, we've found all sorts of stuff... good times

Curious Hound.....after using the glorious gQQgle with your camel comment pasted to assist in the quandary you of "Isn’t a lapidary some kind of camel? ", I discovered the first of many responses where I found this unused piece of internet debris : <An Evansville artist died after falling from a cliff at Garden of the Gods in Southern Illinois on Saturday night.>.......

Lapidary is the practice of non ferrous - non metal machining. Been cutting rocks & gems for many years. Even gem quality diamonds for science. Build most of my own equipment. I do have one piece in the Beijing Museum of Mining & Geology. A championship opal, 137cts with rare colors of magenta & light blue fire among the full color display. When I purchased the rough material, Tibor Shelley (the broker) had 2 armed men standing behind us. Perhaps I may show some pictures to the groups at some point.

I'll have to work up some Max Klinger responses haha. I'm short in the camel jokes department, but it was good for the morning coffee :)) thx.

Here is a natural easy to cut piece, shaped like a pine tree. The pic is poor quality mainly because I simply was looking for the shape, not anything else. I am also a partime gold & silversmith. Build my own casting equipment. I'll have to do a thread on how I steam cast. Super easy to do with a small flower pot, tuna, & tomato can, and a wet paper towel. On a single burner Coleman stove. Works for brass, aluminum too.

Thank you. With tongue in cheek, I was referring to a “dromedary”. I do know what lapidary is. Specifically, it’s another cool and interesting hobby that I should avoid adding to my already overgrown list of hobbies and interests.

Some 1/8" steel sheet in place with 1/4-20 SS button heads. The "20-40" extrusion came in yesterday, so at least I can grind out the welds today & clean up the inside getting it ready for the coolant tank. That sheet came from a 1943 Gates radio station transmitter.

The weather has been formidable. The sheetmetal stubs are being removed in preparation for the coolant tub & sump. Welded to the left & right sides. The blade will be positioned in the far right rear corner. A 20" blade is the largest size I believe can fit. 1-3/8" pillow block bearings were cheap at $39 / pair. At 7 inches long x 2" wide, the drive department should live a long life, may use a VFD to control the 2HP single phase motor.

Today I need to give a visit to a friend that has a rather large sheetmetal brake, hopefully I'll be able to bend a 90 degree on my 1/16th (.065") material, 28 " wide. The $50 Rayobi sawzall has hung in there all these years, now with new life on lithium (batteries) haha.
