I am planning on building a rig for the summer, i currently have an '89 2wd with 2.3L engine. I am wanting to upgrade to a newer ranger, i am thinking about an early 2000s 4x4 ext cab with 4.0L engine.
My plans for it are:
5.5" superlift
8-10k lb warn winch
33" tires
Fabbing or buying front winch bumper and rear bumper as well as a bed bar for lights

I am planning on doing some wheeling but nothing too advanced, so i dont want
to go all out on this at the moment. I also need it to be reliable for some highway travel.
Can anyone give me some advice or tips regarding anything i am planning, im not too set on the plans but that is what i have come up with so far.
My planned budget is also about $10k for this. (Cost of tires wont be too much of a factor because i work in a tire shop)
Thanks

Looks like you are on the right track with $$ to burn. Go for it !!

I'd go for a pre 98 to save you maybe a grand at least, and go james duff instead of superlift. You need to figure in a gear-job for them 33s... if you have the equipment, definitely fab bumpers and the bar. If you make a bar, be sure it anchors on the frame not the bed pan. A warn 8k will do you fine unless all your offroad buddies run fullsize trucks, then go 10k or have them throw up for 12k.

If you go pre 98, check out my thread in the 4x4 suspensions section.

Just my .02

im with fritz there are cheaper lifts for pre 98 trucks and you won't have to regear if u find one with 4:10 gears it would be better with 4:56 but 4:10's will do just fine

I had actually meant on the base model truck, but yeah, the lifts are cheaper too. Might be able to get JY axles with gears.

I don't think those kits look at all similar, but whatever. The first one is a kit for ttb front ends, the second is a kit for sla front ends. ttb= twin traction beam, sla= short long arm. ttb are on the older rbv's front suspension with beams from '83 to '97(?). sla are the newer rbv's front suspension with arms from '98 up.

Ok so ive revised my plans
Ill try for a '97 with 4.0
Ill probably go with james duff stage 3 lift with traction bars
Adding james duff chip
Anyone know what shipping taxes duff charges?
I will not be getting it shipped across the border because of duty and such.

You may be better off finding a shop that will import for you. I've bought two or three things from state side and it happened to be shipped by UPS. I've been blindsided by brokerage fees twice with a bill two months after delivery. Once I include the hassle of warranty I think prices up here aren't as bad as I once thought. It still pays to shop around.
I can't comment about picking up in person in the states as I'm not close enough to make that feasible.
Good luck,

Richard

I literally just got my stage 3 in the mail today. They had a free shipping deal-io going on when I ordered, said shipping from their factory to my door (Tenn to Jersey) was $351, but I lucked out and got it free.

It's about 10 boxes, all very well packaged.

You will need to do something with the steering system. As soon as I opened the boxes, I pulled the pitman arm out and checked it with the one from my 4" RC kit (on the truck), they are the same.

I'll let you know soon enough how necessary traction beams are with the new springs. Right now with rear blocks and the locker I get a LOT of wheel hop on hard-packed sand or dirt especially if it was rain-packed and has the ripples from runoff. I'm hoping the new springs will alleviate some of that.

EDIT: ever consider bobbing the bed? or doing a flat-bed mod? Especially if this isn't a DD. Get a lot of that wheelbase back from the extended cab. Turning tight with a locker in 4x4 doesn't happen. I'm starting to get a lot of battle scars on my body.

Might also depend on your line of work. If you drive a desk and dont haul refrigerators then a bobbed bed won't make a difference, but me, i like to haul stuff. Usually lumber or junk. You'd of course be borrowing a vehicle until it's done.

Why do you want an ext cab? I use mine for storage. Nobody gets back there.
