Hi everyone. My first post here.
I got this Bronco 2 XLT a few Months ago.
Since I got it I had the brakes fixed, shocks replaced, fuel filter replaced, tires replaced, oil changed a few times, Marvel Mystery oil in the engine and gas tank.
The problem i have with it now is the back wheels lock up when I brake in wet weather. I have no control of the vehicle and have come very close to accidents a few times.
The calipers and pads have been replaced by 2 different mechanics.
The rotors have been replace on 2 places.
I put newer tires on and the shocks are new.
This seems to be an ABS thing? I can hear gears grinding when I brake sometimes.
Anyone have similar experiences?

If you hear grinding the ABS is working.

What kind of brakes do you have in the rear?

Have cheap pads I guess. The mechanics put them in. I don't mess with brakes, simple repairs I can handle.
I had one guy do the rotors, front pads and 2 calipers.
When I was in NYC I had a shop replace the back pads but not the drum.
Doubt their ford parts.
I was driving the other day and made a right turn and had to hit the brakes a bit quickly and it lost traction and almost skidded into a guy waiting for the light. Even if i pump the brakes it will still lock up. Sudden braking or going right off a ramp will cause locking and skidding.

Adsm08 knows a lot more about it than me, but a suggestion is when the shoes on the back where changed because they are new they have more pad on them my dad's ranger did something similar to this but we had to run some sand paper over the brakes to sand them down a bit because the pads were rubbing the drum a little when the brakes were released but if you just touched the brake they would lock up. I also had a similar issue but it was on the front of my B2.

Could be the Proportioning valve not adjusted/ working properly.

I would guess there is a proportioning or adjustment issue.

My question was geared more towards the style, not the brand. You are asking questions about the rear brakes and then rattling off a list of services to what sounds like front brake parts. I had to ask because lock up is a common issue on rear-disc swapped vehicles.

I changed the brake shoes on an 89 chevy S-10 a while back and the same issues started, after I completely bled the whole brake system the problem went away.

First thing I would check is all of the hardware inside the drums - just to be sure that you don't have any broken springs, self adjuster is not seized, etc.

Second would be a proportioning issue as mentioned above.

I had this EXACT same thing happen to the Astro van I drive at work and it ended up being an adjuster that was rusted solid, if I remember right. Very annoying, hope you get it fixed.

I have had the brake line bled and both sets of brakes (pads and disk's) replaced.
Also put newer tires on and have 2 different mechanics work on the brakes. The drums are about half way worn but are OK.
The problem seems to be when I go right off a ramp or making a turn. Its better now but the last skidding adventure makes me nervous.
Thanks for the info, but I think I need to get it to a mechanic who can figure it out

Definitely, its pretty hard to really diagnose a problem without having the vehicle in front of us LOL. Brakes are always something that the only thing I do is bleed them and change pads or shoes, anything else I will leave to the pro's.

Also consider nose dive. If your front/rear springs are mush and because the front brakes are dominent you will get light in the ass end and lock issues will ensue. And yes the grinding (GROAN) sound may very well be the ABS doing its job.

Well, the pads are new, front and back, have at least 2 new calipers, 2 new fluid lines replaced, back brake kits are new, line was bled, fluid in the master cylinder is good.
It has been ok lately, but when I take a turn or brake suddenly in wet weather, I am sure it will lock up and I will spin.
I am not about to take off my tires to look at the brakes, mostly because I dont want to mess with anything over my head.
Could it be worn out drums?

the reason you are not getting a good answer is because everytime you respond you say the same information instead of trying to really explain what keeps happening not listing off things that have been done in every post
