has anyone ever heard of turning a smog/egr pump into a supercharger? i was thinking about taking off the egr lines and running an air filter to the pump, so it would basically be pumping in clean air through the egr ports. just a crazy idea for more power. would love to hear any ideas anyone might have thanks.

Well, your name suits you well. Boredom leads to stupid ideas.
A smog pump is as good of a super charger as a hair dryer hooked up to your intake.

WTF is an EGR pump? EGR flows because there is positive pressure in the exhaust system and vacuum on the intake manifold.

The AIR (Air Injection Reaction)or "smog" pump does not pump exhaust gasses. It pumps fresh air into the exhaust stream to act as an "afterburner" and burn off any remaining fuel that may be in the exhaust stream. It won't produce any sort of meaningful boost to the intake charge. If you want to gain power by doing anything with the AIR pump, gut it. Take the impeller out so the pulley just freewheels and doesn't put any drag on the engine.

Boredom... The air pump would not put out enough flow or pressure to act as a supercharger. Not a bad idea, but just too small. :icon_thumby:

first, Welcome to TRS.
sorry, but you're idea for a supercharger just doesn't hold air. yeah, pun intended.

but more importantly, don't stop dreaming up things. every now and then, either you get lucky or have a stroke of genius and an idea you have will really turn into something to be proud of.

Thanks for the input, i had a feeling it wouldn't work but it was worth asking before i tried it. im just trying to figure out inexpensive ways to add power without any drastic changes. once again, thanks for the replies and hopefully ill figure something out.

Some people would argue that a V8 swap isn't a drastic change...:D

I'm assuming that you have a 2.8 since you have an 85. Go check out the 3.8L TBI swap article. That will build you some power and reliability.

The 2.8 has a belt-driven fan right? If you swap that out for an electric fan out of say, a taurus, you can gain some power right there, 10-15hp or so. Also, if your truck has A/C, cut the belt going to the AC compressor, that'll free up a few more HP.

If it is a 2wd street truck, you could look into a Ram air setup, something like this...

You cannot gain 10 to 15 horse by replacing a belt driven fan with an electric one. Mostly because a belt driven fan doesn't eat up 10 to 15 horse. You might get back 3, but unless you only have 3 to begin with, you won't ever feel a change that small.

Also, ram air is cool, but it's only good for one thing, and that is not ram air. It's really good for extra drag, although Redshed's setup looks like it might not really add any extra drag..

i like the idea of a cfi on my lil motor but the main concern of mine is smog. recently i put an electric fan on and i like how it runs cooler and does feel a lil more responsive but it still has no power going up the hills. and yes it is a 2.8 liter and a 4x4 so it has all the extra bullshit computer shit on the carb, like a throttle position sensor etc.. but i was toying with the idea of using an intake manifold off a 74 mustang ii (have had many of these cars) and putting a 32/36 weber on it (it bolts directly on) but i keep coming back to the issue of smog and the stupid electronic shit on the carb.
