As the title suggests. Has there ever been a write up on it.

The reason I ask is I just acquired a '84 with the drivers side quarter window busted out, and would like to make it into a flip up hatch to access the rear with out opening the entire hatch.

I already have a piece of plexi mostly duct taped in its place, so if I built a frame for it, it sees like it wouldn't be too hard.

I'm not sure I follow what you're asking. Could you post a picture of the window you want to turn into a hatch?

Its the large curved quarter window right behind the drivers door, also right above the rear tire.

I also wouldn't be opposed to a soft top style window, just not sure how to seal that.

I'll try and post a picture but my net is slow as heck and my computer doesnt help.

The giant curved glass on the side? That makes more sense. I'm surprised that your hatch doesn't open though. As I recall, the '84 I had did have a glass section that popped up and the '86 didn't, but I could have that reversed.

Yup, now were on the same page.

But I still wouldnt mind swapping out my hatch for one with a 2 piece system, but im sure theres plenty of other threads on that.

This is kinda what I had in mind

I like the idea with the buttons. I want something similar. How about clear like on wranglers? Could somebody that makes convertible tops do it? Or maybe make it zip off?

This guy had a boat shop do this for about $175 he said the clear Vinyl in the middle would have doubled the price.

But because he had a shop do it there still is no write up on how to, guess I'll have to be a Ginnie pig on this one. I have done some vinyl work before on my mustang vert and making holsters with extra material. But nothing this big and custom before.

not sure where you are but I have 2 of the rear windows out of mine that you could have.

I hate to see them just thrown away.

That might allow you to play with the tilt up idea

best to have them made out of acrylic if you want them removable.

or just snap in deals like my doors....the boat top place was doing zip in stuff for cherokees etc.....big bux though. not sure if they are still around.

Yeah. Do it with acrylic and make them open gull wing style.

I have 2 sets in Oklahoma of glass one if you need some.

Lexan is far easier to work with and wont shatter like acrylic. I'd suggest a good roll bar tho... the rear windows are a structural component so removing them will weaken the roof quite alot.

Lexan is just a brand name of acrylic fyi make sure you use a cell cast acrylic not extruded

Nope.... acrylic is the same as plexiglass... it cant be bent without heat or it will break.

Lexan is a poly carbonite which can be molded without heat, the two are entirely differant types of plastic
