Engine Displacement 5.8L, so yes it's a 351 Windsor. Not sure about the E. Looks pretty clean though.

@ spede demn, can you post the door post sticker? I'd like to see the vin #.
PS; I'd go look myself but I'm at home now.

@ adsm08, was there not other 351 cid engines in those years? Like 351M?

There were a few different 351s over the years, the C, M and W. I'll admit that I am a tad fuzzy on most of them since they were all a bit before my time, but I am pretty sure the Windsor was the only one still in production by 1980. The Cleavland was dropped in 74 because it couldn't meet emissions, and the M just sucked because it was a destroked 400, and had cracking issues around the lifters. They were cut from the trucks in 78, but you could get them in cars until 82.

By 80 the Windsor engines were the only ones left for the trucks.

Finding alot of conflicting info... 4th character in vin is a "U" which one site suggests it should be a 302, some sites claim the 351M and the 351W where both used until '82 and that the easiest way to determine which you have is to count the valve cover bolts ... 6 bolts on W, 8 bolts on M

Like I said, the 351M was not a bad engine. It was a destroked 400C, so there are lots of things to do to it to make it better, and a stroker crank is top of the list. It was only bad stock, it can be build up into a killer engine.

It was originally built at Windsor plant, and then production was sent back to Clevland.

The door sticker indicates a 302 but the tag under the hood suggests a 5.8/6.6, so that maybe indicates some body parts have been changed?? I couldnt make out the windshield vin tag but will have to look closer at that today I guess.

FYI... I have an '89 f150 w/302 but I want something with a little more pulling power for our travel trailer, and I do like Bronco's, but I dont know if a 351W will have the power Im looking for. So Ive been thinking I need the 351M or 400.

This decoder shows a 351 Modified for your vin.

I hate to be a wet blanket at the FSB party, but if you want towing power, you aren't going to be a turbo diesel.

I would really try to figure out the VIN on the body, and remember that the 302 and 351 are almost completely interchangable. Someone could have changed it out.

I think the 400's hung around until '82 as well. His emissions label says 5.8/6.6 family which means M not W. It also says engine: 5.8L. But then some clown put a 2.3 emission label on my truck with both a 2.8 vin and engine before I got it...

Doesnt look much like the 302 in my F150 tho, but its an '89 so may not mean much.

Some ppl seem to really like the 351M, which was built in Windsor(the "E" denotes Windsor plant) but apparently it uses the same lower end as the older 351C.

It doesn't really look big enough to be a M... could go either way guess. The aircleaner looks identical to the one in dad's '80 F-350 with a 400 though. A 302 might be the same as well, never really been around a SBF in a fullsize. A better engine pic would go a long ways...

An M is pretty easy to pick out from a W; wider valve covers with different bolt count, no seperate timing cover, thermostat mounts to block rather than intake.

They basically used the 351C bottom end but with 1/2" more material top the pistons to account for the lack of stroke. Pretty cheesy...

It was originally built at Windsor plant, and then production was sent back to Clevland.

Not to be confused with a 302 Windsor that started production at Windsor and was moved the Cleveland plant in the late 60's... but is still called a Windsor. :D

Forget the VIN, look at the engine. It has been 33+ years since that thing was for sure "correct".

Door has probably been changed, most shops will pull conflicting door sickers to avoid confusion down the road.

Valve covers have 8 bolts so it is the 351M, which should pull better than my 302 f150.

The door and windshield vin's match so if any body work has been changed it would be the front end.

Will be a big project but Ive been lookin for awhile so glad to finally have one:yahoo:
