I have an 89 Bronco II with the stock 2.9 v6 when I start it, the engine cranks and fires, and will continue to run, however the starter motor does not shut off. If you tap on the starter soleniod (fender mount soleniod) the starter shuts off and the motor continues to run normally. Already changed soleniod and no change. Any suggestions appreciated.

Sounds like you changed one bad solenoid for another bad solenoid.

it may be that the starter gear is gummed up up not sliding freely. pull the starter and if it's still in usable shape(as in the gear is not chewed up) then try the old WD40. Coat it well and wipe off any gunk built up, even try moving the gear back and forth if you can.

I only suggest this because I have had it happen to me, both ford and non ford rigs

I pulled the starter and wound the gear drive was very weak. It took little effort to pull the gear out and it was slow to snap back. Went to autozone and got a reman starter for 70 bucks ($50.00 when I return the core) I just wanted to be safe and install a new unit. Thanks for everyones help.

This morning i went to start it up and the same thing happened. The starter stayed running with the engine. I shut the engine off and tapped on the relay and it shut off. Started it up again (had to get to school) and it was fine, worked just like it should. Now I suspect a bad ignition switch. Anyone have any ideas?

I would try and make sure of your starter alignment. It sounds like it may be a little cocked causing it to get stuck on the flywheel. Your hiting it with a hammer is likely just shaking it loose from the flywheel. I have seen this before on mustangs.
