had a bit of a problem with my 86 bii this weekend, I have been hearing clicking sounds coming from under the truck in the general direction of the rear end. well the other day the truck started like locking up at intersections and stalling itself out... its an automatic. i'd come up to a red light braking just like any other day. but after the truck stopped it was like she kept wanting to go, like i never to my foot off the gas, then the truck would buck a little and stall like it tried to launch and just died on take off. if i got the transmission out of OD or D and into N it would idle back to normal just fine, and half the time would go back into gear decent or with a loud knock. well almost got the truck home when at another intersection it starts stalling out real bad, as soon as i put it into D it was like someone was dumping a clutch and stalling out a 5 speed, i shifted the case to 4 low and tried D again with a little gas going into it... bad idea i know but i was pissed and wanted to get the truck movin again. there was a loud bang and some serious grinding as the truck freely rolled into a parking lot on the side of the road, got under it with the truck still in gear to see the back driveshaft spinning, well i pulled the driveshaft. its broken on the side going to the rear end now(cv style driveshaft), but my question is... could the driveshaft going out cause all the stalling out? was it just binding up in the CV? or did my rear end go out and i just broke my shaft in the process? i was going to order a new driveshaft from ebay. And with my truck being limited slip and 4.10 gears i really hope i don't need to start looking for another rear end too. thanks for the help in advance.

Sounds like a torque converter gone bad to me. When they fail like that, it won't slip allowing the engine to idle normally in gear with your foot on the brake and will instead try to stall the engine just as a truck with a manual transmission would without pushing the clutch in.

Sounds like your Torque Converter Clutch(TCC) is staying locked. Which could easily finish off a weak and worn CV driveshaft.

the truck has been shifting a little rough, staying in first gear till its reved pretty high the past few times i drove it. so should i just replace the torque converter and the driveshaft? how hard is it to change in the bii? i've done torque converters on full size 2wd chevy's before it was cake, hopefully my lil bii will be just as easy minus the fact its 4x4 :-P

Dont know for sure but I dont think the 4.0 upgrade would be near useless as A4LDs are junk.

Your Diff should be fine

Your driveshaft is probably what the clicking was.

I would pull the pan off of your trans and do a service on it and when you refill it add some trans medic or other additive like that and maybe it will save you from pulling the tranny. Sounds like the valves are getting a little sticky in the valve body, as you say it has been delaying the shifts along with the other problem.
