Hey to all I`m new to this forum, 1984 ranger with 2.8 [new] removed C-3 to 1990 A4LD complete rebuild sonnix rear sprag, center support bearing, complete valve body rebuild transgo, sonnax, with external cooler. new ring and pinion 4.10s on 15"rims and tires. It runs very well puts down most that I run against even the late ones. It resides in CA. so there is only so much you can do, with stupid smog laws. Without going into alengthy story what has happened, I shifted out of overdrive to third on along hill pull to get back to power band of engine, all of this with out leaving TCC left converter locked, the second time I did this it felt very weird I new somthing was hurt. When we dismantled the trans found bad axle for one pinion gear in planets heat damage in all of overdrive planets and sun gear to star washer all torrington bearings, center support bearing ruined, center support, and planets ring gear all heat damaged. Finnaly here the question, is this my fault from not leaving TCC and shifting in and out of overdrive to third or is this from faulty overdrive planets, bad axle to pinion support. I know that you dont have the parts to analyze there condition just kind of a planket question. I shift the 3-4 and TCC with two switches on dash, overdrive[4th] at about 2500 on tach and then TCC. No more manual shifting!! I`m going to vacum control [manifold vac] to vacuum switch to switch off TC with low manifold vacuum. The switch is adjustable and to unlock concerter at about 5" vac good place to start. Second questoin: If converter is unlocked will the trans automaticly downshift to third and out of overdrive on hard pull or wide open throttle, will governor take over.
Any answers welcome thanks to all Brutus

I have noticed, that when the TC over heats it will puke fluid out the breather, and the other is binding , slipping rather slow but the temp goes very high, so high in fact I have seen the trans overheat a motor durring winter,

slow heat is very bad, because it heats up all the parts to very high temp with heavy loads thus causing premature wear on all moving parts.

and I think this would make your life easier: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MSD-8950/ Hook this up to your TCC.

Thanks viper; for quick responce and your summit string, The fluid didnt burn or least to the point to change smell of fluid [burnt smell]. I`m wondering if I completly overloaded planets or overdrive circuit all my bodies are thinking that maybe there is a lube proplem in tranny but we checked front pump on lube circuit all ok This gives me more ideas on how to shift without computer taking care of things. Thank again Brutus

If any of the spraggs were not aligned right and or the drums were not set on the clutches all the way, it would have clearence issues and apply preassure to the bearings and the added stress would kill the pinions and axles.
