Broke Another 8.8... Upgrade Options?

I call it insurance.

But seriously, i completely agree with ya. I wouldn't let the bolt pattern dictate what axle i used. However there is a huge aftermarket for 9" stuff and they can be built to turn 40s and jump and all kinds of shit. I dont think he'll be disapointed with it. Just make sure you find a big bearing third and a tapered housing.

I want to keep the 5x5.5 so that I dont have to change wheels and front brake equipment on my D44. I put alot of time and money to build my beadlocks.

However, I have found that the 9 inch and the semi floater D60 can be had in my bolt pattern. Both look like they could make a good rear axle.

Chckn.... Maybe someday I can swing Mogs or Rocks, but not today on this budget!

A 35-spline 9 would probably do you good, though I don't remember what locker you're running... I've heard of some issues with the design of 35 spline 9" ARBs, not sure if there's a 35-spline Detroit out (haven't checked), if so, maybe that's the way to go if you're set on sticking with your ½-ton lug pattern. 37"+ tires really should be on 1-ton hardware if that's what you're planning on IMO.

WHat trail were you on that it broke? (your description sounds a bit like Holcomb Creek, which ain't anything too crazy extreme... I'm bettin' metal fatigue must've gotten to it :icon_confused: ).

dude.

dana 60 all the way....full floater

cheap and easy and available

machine and drill up a set of hubs is pretty cheap

the reason my rig went sas when it did was because of the 8.8 limitations, not the d35. though sourcing good parts for a d35 was getting difficult and is very difficult to get parts now, so it was inevitable.

I literally just sold my 8.8 because I was scared of what's happening to you. I gladly took the $1000 I got for it and started ordering 35 spline 9" stuff. Great part about a 35 spline 9" is that the install kit, lockers, alloy axles, are all the same price as the 31 spline stuff.

Where did you get a grand for an 8.8?

If you want cheap and easy...

82-84 F250. It is a SF60 with factory 35spline. Not some of them... all of them! Easily redrillable to 5 on 5.5 I would think.

Other than that, 35spline 9.

Here is mine.

Only issue I could see you having with this axle is the width

Its about 2.5" narrower than my 60 IIRC

From some guy building an XJ. It was all new, 4.88 gears, with an Eaton E-locker, which is part of the reason I sold it. Come to find out of all the E-locker applications made, the one for Ford 8.8 has the weakest engagement system of them all. I was thinking about dropping $600 on a Super 88 kit, but after I found that out I figured I'd just dump the whole axle and get money out of it while I could. Now I'm building a 35 spline 9", which is not as pricey as everyone makes it out to be. I'll have about the same amount of money in the 9" as I would of the 8.8 had I bought alloy axles for it, and I'll be worlds ahead in the strength department.

I picked up my new axle today...should be a nice strong upgrade. I will give you guys a hint on what it is and will post more pics one I start the install. :yahoo::yahoo::yahoo:

The front has a built 44 that will stay for now. Alloy shafts etc etc etc. For now it will be fine, but down the road with bigger tires might be another story. We will play it by ear on that one!

Looks like the B2 will be under the knife for a while I will be dropping in the Prorock 60 along with a 63" Chevy spring swap. Gonna order a set of Procomp 5.5" 63" lift springs and then a D60 and 63" swap kit from Ruff Stuff.

Getting rid of the 4" Skyjacker springs, 3" lift blocks and Belltechs should make it ride better and kill some of the axle wrap!

selling the belltechs? what skyjacker springs are they?

The Skyjackers are the 4" lift springs for a Ranger or BII

The Belltechs are bent and will be going in the trash! Not offroad rated! :annoyed:

lol alright.
the 4" are the rear? leaf? what about those?
i'm gonna have to lift the rear of mine some when i do the xj coils upfront (i think) and would like to get rid of blocks.
