Long story short, I destroyed another 8.8! :bawling:

I am looking to upgrade but want to keep my ground clearance and 5x5.5 bolt pattern. Thinking a 35 spline 9 inch. Anybody have any tips or thoughts on this axle? Something better out there?

Little info on what happend yesterday!

Yesterday I went out wheeling with a group of friends in Big Bear. It was a great day till the end. On a really ugly line, I snapped a rear axle shaft. I carry spares, but we couldnt get the broken piece out! :joe2: It was getting dark and we had a rough trail and one more rock garden to get through and another 10 to 15 miles of dirt and pavement to get somewhere a tow truck would pick me up. I slapped the rear end back together and pulled the driveshaft. Tried the Hi-Lift trick and it actually worked! It was slow going, but did get me out. The whole 8.8 is trashed now with a broken stuck axle and ran for 15+ miles with no oil in it! Oh well... time to upgrade!

A 9" is your best option since you're keeping the lug pattern

Bummer!

Is this 8.8 you broke a 28 spline or 31?

Chkn... I am looking into a 9". Not sure how heavy we are going to go yet. 31, 35, 40 spline etc.

Lego... This was my second 8.8 that I have broken. All have been 31 spline. The first axle, I twisted the pumpkin and had to scrap that housing. This one, I twisted an axle and it broke off in the locker, unable to get it out!

What happens when you start breaking 9s?

Hmmmmm...thats why I am still in my planning phase here. Gotta figure out whats best for me.

This is what i use 9s for

Is the locker damaged or salvageable?

What size tires you runnin' bisquik? 35's? 37's?

The locker is stuck in the carrier, so its crap along with the rest. Currently running 35's but bigger will come next time I need tires.

don't let something as little and simple as bolt pattern be the choice of you axle.

And why not?

b/c-- there comes a point to where its just stupid outrageous crap... that's not really needed, its just wasteful and dumb. lets stay somewhat sensible here. :thefinger:
