Broke my Sh** yesterday.

I'll start with my truck. 99 b4000 4x4 3.73's sitting on 33's with explorer front axles and hubs.

Friend got stuck went to pull him out now there is a god awful noise coming from somewhere under the truck when Im in 4x4 (hi or low). 2 wd is fine. Nothing looks broken, although i noticed a bit of play in my front right CV axle where it goes into the diff houseing (not very bad bearing in the diff maybe?) it has some up and down play and is leaking a little from the seal. Not too sure if its the transfer case or not,as I would assume that any problems with the front would happen all the time since the wheels are always engauged to the front diff. Sounds kind of like a Ping/ binding noise, I can feel it under my feet as well.

Any help would be awesome guys

IIRC, if your hubs are working correctly, then only the tires/wheels should spin when in 2wd, not the rest of the drive train. when your locked into the 4wd mode (hubs locked in), that is when you'll notice something broken in the front part of the drive train.

It sounds to me like you toasted the t-case. I would remove the front driveshaft and see if it still makes the noises in 4wd to verify.

With the explorer hubs and axles the hubs are always locked 4x4 is locked by just by the transfer case..

Also took off the front drive shaft and noise went away. I noticed that one of the u joint ends (by the front diff housing on the drive shaft) was siezed and not moving at all. Could that cause the other end (Im going to call it the CV style end) by the transfer case to bind?? Like i said took the front drive shaft out drove around in 4x4(sort of).

So im thinking of trying to change the u joint first because its cheap and easier to do then the transfer case.

anyone else
