whats wrong with the brakes and u-joints? i did find that a good way to familiarize yourself with your vehicle is to lay underneath and just poke around and look at stuff, even if you dont know what it is!

and just FYI its not good for the diff to drive around with different diameter tires, just letting you know (if you didnt already).

sucks about your tire, i lost one a few months back too, got cut on something on some powerlines trails. my g/f was reallllly happy that night.

yea i agree when you get a replacement get a spare thats the same size even if its got 50% treadlife

I know. I only drove home and to go pick up the new tire (cost me 30$, score!)

When I save up another 30, Im buying a same size spare.

It won't hurt an open diff to drive it with different sized tires. That's like saying it is bad to drive it only in circles.

weird, my owner's manual lied to me.

it never quite made sense to me why it would be bad (ive only owned vehicles with open diffs, till i installed lockers in this truck). you go around corners all the time and the tire travel different distances, so why should a smaller tire be bad.. and why is everyone under the impression its so bad?

so what about my awd subaru with open diffs, it says tires need to be identical diameter, left right front rear, and supposedly .25" difference can cause problems for the diff, is that bs too?

Will, I respect you and your exp, but I dissagree here. If you had to go from A to B with different tires on an open diff then yes. It wont hurt it, do it. But to put different diameter tires on and just drive around like normal cannot be good. Spider gears are not intended for that much work. The wear, the stress, the heat. They would all add up fast if you were working the spiders like that. But, from A to B. No worries. (If you have anything but an open diff, DO NOT drive with different dia. tires.)

Lol, I *think* I am reading some sarcasm? Your owners manual did not lie to you. Imagine that you had to walk in a straight line with two proper shoes. = no problem
Now imagine you have to walk a straight line with one 6" heel and one steel toed rubber boot, and keep the same pace. This would not be comfortable, probably develop a cramp or something in your leg.
The drive line components are not designed to be hobbled like that all the time.

Just what is the problem you are having with your truck? Is it a "squeak squeak squeak squeak" when you are driving really slow? If so it is probably your u-joints. They aren't bad to replace, just aggravating if anything. It helps to have someone drive your truck down the driveway really slow and you follow alongside it and listen to where the sound is coming from. Good luck!

P.S. You can also spray that u-joint with WD-40 and you might notice a slight change in sound, if so you can be pretty positive that you have isolated your problem.

only slightly.. but i honestly can't explain WHY its bad to do, i've played with differentials for hours--so i know the nature of them--and it makes sense it would work.

i have never heard of anyone actually doing it and having problems/breaking something (but i also dont know anyone that has run different diameter tires on the same axle, probably because 9/10 people would think its bad to do.).

I also know he wouldn't chime in unless he had a concrete understanding of the topic.

When you go in a straight line your spiders don't rotate on themselves like in a corner, they just spin as one with the carrier. With different size tires, the spiders continually rotate on themselves, on a solid bushing with lube, no real bearings, so there's more wear.
