ok i have a 2.9 88 ex cab 4x4 ranger my question is dose it have a valve in the brake sys that send more pressure to the back brakes then the front . the reason im asking is my back brakes are really touchy some time not all the time one day they work fine then all the sudden they lock up if i think of hiting to brakes but they let go as soon as i let off the brakes my dad said it might have a bad drum on it but i would think it would do it all the time not just some times any one got any clues to what could be wrong with it :annoyed:

i would try loosening them up alittle bit. its easiest to pull the drum and turn that star adjuster piece til the shoes arent as tight against the drum.

they will automatically adjust tighter when you brake while backing up, but if they are too tight, i dont think they can loosen on their own.

Clean them good with brake cleaner and put some grease on the contact points of the shoes to the base plates. It could be the base plates have grooves worn in them also give them a good eyeball if it dont look right it is not.

i didnt see anything wrong with them and they are clean thanks

got me beat. is your parking brake cable in good shape? think maybe they are right on the border of seizing up when you brake?

i know its a long shot since its pretty much 2 separate systems, but its worth a try

hows the master cylinder maybe the pedal is sticking not fully releasing the pressure on the brakes.

e brake is the frist thing i disconnected to see if it would fix it

Rear wheel cylinders. You may have even noticed the lockup may have occurred more often during wet weather, when starting cold.

Good luck
