Hello All,

Let me start off by saying that I haven't taken anything apart yet.
I drive my truck to work and back and really besides a trip over to my parents to mow the lawn every week thats about 50 miles a week.

Lately when I first start to drive the first or second time I put my foot on the brake I hear a big "pop" or "bang". Can't for the life of me think of what it might be besides a stuck caliper. After the first time it goes that I will not hear it again unless I stop somewhere and let the truck sit a bit.

Was also thinking it might be a ball joint, but I got new tires about 6 months ago and the tire shop said nothing about my ball joints. Reading post on here and from other people talking, tire shops will try to talk you into repairing anything that has to do with the suspension in a second.

So does anyone gave any ideas what it might be. Last did the brakes a little over 5 years ago. New pads, rotors, hardware.

Pull the tires and take a look... Be ready to buy new calipers and wheel cylinders as well as your pads/shoes. After 5 years chances are the bleeder screws may be siezed, and at least to me it'd be worth knowing I have the $50 or so in hand just in case. Beats trying to easy-out bleeders.

Then be prepared to replace the line all the way back to the master cylinder, unless you have a flare tool and new fittings. One siezed fitting and you're back to the next section of line. Did it with my truck and now the only OE line is from the MC to the rear-splitter.

If you have the $, I'd shell it out, do it right, and never worry about it. Although, not having done this for very long, I'm not too sure what exactly could cause your problem, less do I know if a caliper piston can stick. Still sounds like you're replacing one caliper, so we're back to doing both (save yourself the trouble later on). Be sure to inspect the rubber lines too.

Whaat they said........and if you don't have the extra cash......get a friend to listen to the brakes whileit's jacked up---maybe he can spot the part that causing the popping noise.

Whaat they said...

Oops, just deleted my post before I saw you had added to it Doorgunner. Basically I had a long description on what to check then looked at Mazda's profile and realized he knows his way around the brakes. Mazda, basically what I said was you could try raising up the wheels to see if you can turn them. That might tell you if it's a caliper/slave. How many miles do you have on that truck now? I thought mine had a lot at 203k (eyes rolling).

It's got about 275,000 on it now. Haven't really been putting the miles on it the last 5 years only like 3,000 a year.

Thanks for the replies guys. It was the pads shifting around.

Rep you very much!
