The light on my dash that says "brake" is lit up, the e-brake is released and the truck rolls and stops just fine.

sometimes the light goes off for a few seconds before coming back on.

86 B2, any ideas?

what all is that light actually attached to in terms of things that could make it illuminate in the first place.

Check your brake fluid level, if low the light will come on to warn you.

If its low, you either have a leak or worn out brake pads.

the brake light will also stay lit from a fualty switch in the ebrake pedal. have had that happen before

Yep, that's a common thing. Even my Ranger (an upward rap on the pedal when it's released would usually resolve the situation), and in my F-150 sometimes the light doesn't come on at all.

It might also come on if your RABS (rear abs) is faulty. In that case, it's up to you as far as fixing it, it's a like $25 sensor on the top of the rear axle at fault (typically). I never bothered fixing it on my one BII until I went to sell the truck (wish I wouldn't have done that).

But like the others stated, check the condition of your brakes and to see if it's low on fluid. If it's low and the brakes are good, you might have a leak somewhere.

an 86 B2 won't have ABS (rear or all wheel).
do the following in order:
  1. Check fluid
  2. check switch on p brake.
  3. If fluid is/was low check brake pads (if you have disc brakes) and shoes, and wheel cylinders (while the drums are off).
  4. If those are good, you have a leak. Check the wheel brake lines (the rubber ones) and check wheel cylinders. There should be no fluid on the hoses or at the wheel cylinders.

My '86 BII had RABS... I should know, I stole the 4.10 geared axles out of it for my Choptop, lol. Not really sure exactly when RABS was introduced into the RBVs though.

my master is non-abs, so it's not that.

okay, checked the fluid, it's low.

i never really bled it properly after replacing the master, could it have self-bled the air out of the system and that's why my fluid is low?
