Just picked up an immaculate 99 short box reg cab 2wd, its got the 4cyl with a 5 speed.

I am plnning on swapping in a 4.6 and manual trans.

Questions:

1. I know all about the PI vs non PI heads on these, question is though can I get a 4.6 from a truck and swap on a car intake??

2. What trans should I use?? Mustang trans, f150 trans?? (manual only)

3. Can I retain the stock exhaust manifolds??

Thanks :)

1

get a pi engine...swap intake to whatever you like, or works best.

2
if its a strret 2wd...go car trans.

3

potentially.

Should be able to as long as you either stay PI or non PI. I forget what the difference is but there is a difference.

4.6 swap

Hey, I'm not sure what the difference is in a 99 vs 01 but I just completed this swap with an automatic. Check my build of project "OUTRANGEROUS". Hope this helps and don't be afraid to ask these guys here, someone will help you.
I was able to use the stock exhaust manifolds but had to fab the exhaust piping. My truck uses torsion bar suspension up front, no springs.
Get the newest 4.6 you can afford, the PI upgrade is best if your not planning on a rebuild and a tight budget, if not, I understand that putting new PI heads on the non PI motor actually produces a little more power. higher compression I believe.
keep us posted.
I might be able to help you with some wiring. Get the electrical manual for both vehicles, it's impossible without them.

As far as car 4.6 Vs truck 4.6, you may want to check the front accessory arrangement. Not sure if they differ, but you may want to see if something is obviously in the way.

A PI intake will fit non-PI heads. It's not perfect, but it's done regularly if you find a good deal on the wrong parts.

My brother got roped into somebody else's "upgrade"

They stuck PI heads on a non PI engine in an Expedition and I forget what happened but it didn't work out. They had to track down an intake from a '99 (and only a '99) to get it to work out. They fit the PI heads but would still work with the older computer system.

Well I now have to find an engine, I am going to go through it and put a forged cobra crank in it, forged rods, forged pistons. Will prob run flat top pistons for around an 11:1CR and get it tuned for E85.

Will be street 2wd truck so I will look for a mustang trans.

Oh one other quick question, what is the deal with using 2wd sploder front spindles????
