so im thinkin about building my engine with 30 over, new cam, and rebuilt and port and polish head. im seeing on here that if you take the crank, rods, and pistons from a 2.5 then you can stroke the 2.3? so if i did the bore what would i need from the 2.5 to make the 2.3 a stroker? thanks guys

what makes a 2.5 is..

a 2.5 crank...

the problem is..they came in the later "small journal" size main bearings. so unless your block is a small journal block..(roughly 89 or newer..you may need special main bearings to get the crank to work...

I seem to recall a specially bearing part number somewhere for that purpose..don't quote me..

( I see that yo may have already a "late sytle block" if ur talkin about ur "sig" engine)..you may be good to go...just order the right pistons/rods..after your bore..once you fit the crank

(did I get that right?)...

i have a 97 ranger with a 2.3 in it. im planning 30 over bore. according to the tech section stock bore is 3.780 so i would be at 3.81 after bore. so would i need to get the 2.5 rods for the stroke or would i have to buy new ones?

Why would you bore an engine over? You really don't gain any power from a bore...any noticeable power anyway.

it has 162k miles so the bore is mostly to freshen it up and bring all the cylinders back to the same size and shape and hone it.

Thats something a machine shop will decide. You have no idea how much they will need to bore it out until you open it up. I would recommend going to the next size up...that way if you need to in the future you can bore it again.

I have done this -2.55 litre stroker :icon_twisted: it was more expensive than a regular rebuild but not like break the bank expensive as i am a cheap ass MF ! We took the 2.3 out of my 86 4x4 and set the complete head/intake aside. then i went to pull a part and lucked up on a 95 2300 ,this block has the bearings that work with the 2.5 crank. I had to buy a $300 2.5 just for the crank :bawling: and throw the rest away .I found some obscure parts house on line that has 2300 ohv pinto parts(you are building a pinto race motor of sorts which is good as you are NOT the first to do this) for cheap .I found a machine shop to put it together and work the head a little and went .040 over bore which yields the 2.55 litres .I was about $1800.00 all in and it RAN STRONG ,for 6 weeks then a rod let go on I-5 at speed ! It was cool to say I had a stroker and it ran WAY good for the hodge podge collection of parts that it was and 1800 is not the end of the world but it can be done.

If you want all out power from the 2.3, look up esslinger. They have over 40 years experience in nothing but the 2.3 motor...

This is a pretty easy build,we have done it several times so far on different trucks. If you are running the 97 in your sig, just get a 98-01 2.5,bore and get the head milled, use your 97 tube header.Same motor block, bolt in deal. You have to buy a 2.5 anyways, just use that motor. Our cost,$200 for engine,$15 a hole to bore and hone,$60 to get the head wacked,$65 for Sealed Pro pistons, new on ebay, gaskets and such, had less than $800 in the motor we are racing right now and doing it this way,you would have your complete 97 2.3 to sell or keep for a spare

so what would i have to do to raise the compression and squeeze out some more power?

Shave the head, increase octance rating (87 to 91 or 93)

shaved the head about 60,if you go much more than that you might have to get a adjustable timing gear, probably should anyways to maximize hp.
